I have been having great difficulty purchasing a 2nd MX-5. None have come up under $2000 in a 200 mile search (without damage or 300K).
After a little drama, I managed to pick up a 1990. Unfortunately it needs a bit of mechanical work to become a DD.
The Bad:
May need a new battery. Guy hooked up an alternate one, and it drove decently.
Front Main Seal Leaks. Pretty bad.
Crank pulley has some wobble. Will video this in the next few days.
Needs all the petty maintenance stuff. fluids/filters. Car feels sluggish, until it gets nice and warm
Has been driven once every 2 months since 2006. not sure what's dry rotted.
Interior smells like cat spray, gross. OdorBan to the rescue!
Some missing paint on the door, trunk, and windshield frame
The Good:
Body is near-perfect. Rear bumper was replaced in 2000.
Interior is clean and not worn, Just a crack on the dash, by the hood
Brand new top
brand new tires (Falken ZEIX 512s, on chrome steelies, aka winter wheels)
Car drives decently, after being warmed up.
only 101K miles
Great windows, glass itself is tinted.
Most likely, I'll be swapping some parts from my car. Maybe the engine, the power windows/mirrors, wheels, and any other bits. I'll probably keep the black interior, since I'm not sure how the black and tan will look with a black top.
