reading the wheel fitment guide however says that a wagon lowered will JUST run a 42 offset with 17x7 and 205s and a sedan can run a 2-3mm lower offset?

Right, sedans can get away with a little less of an offset, but it's still a gamble.

Try it out. I am running 17x7 +42 215/45 tires on my sedan, with rubbing only when the car is loaded with people.
