Thread: question about EGR removal

    question about EGR removal

I've owned 3 of these FS-DE proteges and I've never done the EGR block off where you remove the EGR pipe from the manifold to the TB.

Well,......I replaced my manifold with an ebay header and had to cut the stock egr in order to get the manifold installed. There was NO WAY it would possibly line up. We tried for hours.

My question is: what do you do with the EGR inlet under the TB? I'm having impossible idling issues and I think it may be attributed to the EGR being open..

Here's the rub though...... I drove the car for 2 days with a nasty exhaust leak and no egr and it drove just fine.

    what gives?

I took the two "nuts" off of the EGR pipe and filled them with JB Weld to make caps out of them. They screw on just like they would if the pipe were connected. I gave them to JC and he installed them but it didn't take long before he had a CEL. The manifold won't hold vacuum without the EGR pipe and the EGR being open, and your exhaust leak has to be major with the pipe not connected.

Did you try connecting the EGR pipe to the manifold before you hooked it up to the head?

The 2 days problem is most likely to the ECU resetting as it takes about 100 miles to do so.

well we reset the ecu (battery removal) and the CEL stayed on and immediatly had the same running issue.

I don't know if the EGR is the problem or not but the car won't idle for shit...though it drives like new.

When JC had the CEL would his car hold an idle?

It should have... because the ECU was plugged up and didn't have a huge vacuum leak like I'm sure yours does.

When you guys remove the EGR and pipe what do you do? seal the EGR up or remove it and use a block-off plate?

When I first installed the 626 IM on the P5, I didn't have the 626 EGR pipe.. so what I did was cut off the P5 pipe just after the bend (on the intake mani side) and stuck a small breather filter on it. Car idled fine, vacuum was at 22-24 inHg, boost held at 6 psi, and no CEL.

that makes NO sense then.... Why would my car not hold an idle if it was capable of sucking in outside as yours was? Maybe it's the quantity of outside air?

I'm going to put some "mighty putty" over the pinched off end of the pipe and let it harden on there to seal it up. that should prevent ANY air coming in and should solve my idle problem...

if it doesn't this car is going to auction and I'm buying this evo.

O.o....wanna give me the supercharger for free then???

For real though could you not just make an extension and reconnect the ERG pipe to the header?

I damaged the pipe when removing it. I could easily make a clean cut, thread it, make an adapter and reconnect it but I'd rather remove it all and just put a cap on the EGR and be done with it.

Or take it off and get one of those flex pipes from home depot and still be able to run an egr properly and not worry about any CELs?
