Thread: Speed3 with Protege wheels

    Speed3 with Protege wheels

    They ALMOST fit.

There was just a slight interference with the spokes on the caliper in a couple different spots. I think with a thin spacer on the front, they would fit just fine.

Those are the factory tires on those wheels. They haven't been on my car since I took them off in November of 2006. One of them is completely flat due to a nail. My plan is to actually get that tire patched and put these wheels and tires back on the car when I trade it in (next spring). Factory tires on a car with ~85,000 miles..... who would have thought! The tires are DONE though. Wet traction on them is HORRIBLE. They are so dried out and worn down.

oh my the brakes look SO good behind those little wheels.

Some 16s do fit on the Speed3, so it's good to know that the stock Protege wheels don't. They'd make great winter wheels for a Speed3 otherwise, they look nice!

Were you seeing if they fit on a Speed3 because you're in the market for one to replace the Protege and figured you'd keep them as winter wheels and trade the car in with your current winter wheels?

I think the wheels WILL fit- with a spacer. 3mm or so. The wheel will rotate just fine- until the spoke passes over 3 parts of the caliper- the ends and center. And even then, it will still rotate, it just makes a little noise as the spoke passes over the caliper. If you were to drive it long enough, something would end up wearing away to clearance itself. It might be possible to just grind away the casting marks on the caliper and it would work fine.

But no, this was just for a CMZC member who is looking for a winter wheel set up. There is going to be a gap coming up in my Mazda ownership. It's happened before. Not a big deal.

But you'll be happy to know that the gap will be ended with the purchase of a Miata. I just don't know when that will be. Or what gen Miata that will be.

I think a spacer would do it. I sold my Tribute wheels (16x7 +45 offset) to a local Speed3 owner for winter use. He stopped by the house and we mounted one up to the front axle and it spun free and clear. Helped him load them into the car and I got $200 (paid $204 for them on ebay).
