Different Wheel Widths.
Offset is Relative to width
If the Wheel is narrower..the offset does not have to be as high to clear...Same goes for the other way.
When you make a wheel wider....You have to incrase the offset to compensate for the increasing width of the rim.
It really has nothing to do with tire sizing at that point.....Once you get the width and offset correct..then tire size will play a factor in what will rub and what wont.
Hope this makes sense and helps you understand.
225/40 is actually a shorter overall tire Vs the 215/45...but its 10mm wider.
The 225/40/17 is 24.08'' Tall while the 215/45/17 is 24.61'' Tall.
The 225/45/17 is 24.97(25") Tall.
This tire would make you read slower than you are actually travelling.
Your speedo would read faster than you are going by a minute amount.
Yes I know how to read tire numbers (not that they actually are accurate at all). Since 215/45-17 is a decent bit taller than the stock Protege5 size, the speedo would be off a decent bit (10x as much as it would be off with a 215/40-17, the closest you can get to stock diameter in a 17").
Not exactly sure where in that post I even said the 225/40 wasn't shorter than 215/45 --I said 225/40 was shorter than 225/45. They're both big for a Protege5.
The MSP stock size is 3 full inches more circumference (on a reference tire) than the P5 size.
215/45-17, 215/40-17, 225/40-17, etc --they're all bigger than stock. Of those, 215/45 is the worst
It wasnt directed at you..It was general Info for the Masses.
And the stock P5 IIRC is a 195/50/16....23.6'' tall.
And yes..actual measured heights varies with manufacturer.
I was actually only posting to help clear up the offest question posed earlier..and I just got into the tire sizing as well.
Geez..sorry.
You would think I just called you an idiot or something with your response.![]()
Chris is still in attack mode, but I understand. I'm the same way after I get done with finals..
sorry, just clearing up incorrect information. Don't want this place to become the other place. You said 225/40-17 would make the speedo read faster than you're going because it's smaller than a 215/45-17, but the member asking about that has a P5, for which a 215/45-17 is 4% larger than stock.
Thanks for all the info guys, no need to argue over this.
I'll be more specific:
I know how the numbers work on tires, I also know that the larger diameter tires will throw off my speedo.
What I was really interested in knowing was if the tires i have right now (225/45s mounted on Mazda6 rims that dont fit, they hit the strut in the back) will fit with the Racing Harts' offset?
If not I have to buy new tires.
