View Full Version : FMIC fitment

How in the world do you fit an FMIC behind the P5 bumper? I struggled with this quite a bit yesterday and didn't do such a good job. My bumper is extremely stretched out and the grille, splashguards, and fender don't really line up the way they're supposed to.
I ever had to cut a whole bunch of it away, and the only way I saw possible was to cut into the metal (the bumper itself).
Anyone have any good input for me here? I'd really like to relocate it so my bumper can fit properly again.

What size FMIC are you using, and how is it being mounted?

yeah I saw in your pics that it looked cut up. how thick is your IC?
one thing that helps is to relocate the loop for the power steering "cooler" behind the little beam that supports the hood latch. You just have to undo a few bolts and you can move it around to do this.
but it looks like your IC is bolted to the bumper support so there isn't much you can do in terms of moving it

my mam one was a tight fit, but it made it okay...i did trim a few spots on the back side of the bumper

yeah that helped with Turbolife's kit and I dont know of anykit bigger than that one...In fact the hot pipe was mugh more of a problem then the FMIC itself!...
Although with his you replace the bumper bar so that I am sure has something to do with the ease of install....

I bolted mine to the front of the bumper support. I first had it under it, but then when I put the bumper on, the IC would stick out underneath the bumper and wasn't located behind the lower grille. The only way for me to get it behind the lower grille was to mount it to the metal, but then the pipes would get in the way of stuff..
One of these days I'll just buy an actual FMIC kit and do it right. For the time being the DIY kit will have to do..

you'll make it work....just have some patience and make the right cuts.

for the piping there's some metal down there that can be cut or bent as needed. Not all of it but some. I think I have pics of where I made a little cut, it's down where a CAI air filter would sit. my hot pipe just goes underneath the chassis :P
once you get it working you'll forget about how much you don't like how it's set up and you'll probably never bother "fixing it" as long as it works fine :P

Yea I definitely have to relocate the hot pipe and FMIC all together. First off, the bumper is all stretched and not fitting right, and second the hot pipe hangs WAY too close to the ground.

dude you have the biggest ballz in the world if you are driving like that. You are going to hit a bump or something and end up having the whole front of your car ripped off!

can you post pics of your piping off the car or get some shots of it from the engine bay? I'm curious to see why it sits like that...

do you only have one fan or is the other one mounted on the front of the radiator?
Depending on how much you need to adjust the intercooler itself it looks like you could solve your hot-pipe problem by just cutting a little bit of pipe off that first peice coming from the turbo. Is that piping custom or is that from a HiBoost FMIC?

It's all custom, I hate it honestly.. too many couplers and possible boost leaks but it'll work for now. THIS is indeed a temp setup, and I will be looking for something better in the near future.
The other fan is waiting to be mounted, I need to make brackets for it cuz it's a slim. I'm just gonna stay away from A/C until I do that.
I don't think cutting that pipe would do anything. The problem is that in order to get the pipe out of the engine bay and to the front of the car, it needs to go underneath everything.. there's no convenient fender bypass like there is on the driver side.
If someone could post up a pic of how they routed their hot-pipe that would help quite a bit.

I see what you mean....Contact Turbolife....If he has a kit left or is going to do another GB you can get his Perrin Replica kit (which outperformed the actual Perrin kit) for 675 shipped. His kit requires notching out two spots on the frame and you have to replace the bumper support with his bumper bar, but you cant get a better looking, better performing, or shorter piped kit for a pro anywhere else on the market...he only has one pipe for the cold-pipe and one pipe for the hot pipe...Everything fits really tight so no leaks and very short routing. Plus you keep your fogs. Check out my vGarage for pics of mine if you like.
If replacing the bumper bar is a turn-off I understand that, but his bumper bar is thick/strong as F and if you get into a crash...well dont worry cause the beefy intercooler will absorb all the damage anyways!

that's how my hot pipe is routed, but I used smaller piping on the hot side vs the cold side
I have pics from when my front end was off a couple weeks ago I'll go digging

the part in the engine bay looks basically just like yours but actually MORE ghetto. There's a random stock MSP plastic pipe in the mix between the two visible aluminum pipes.

your hot pipe doesn't look too bad... better than my old one in fact. i'm sure the part you can't see in the picture isn't that good though, that place is a pain in the ass. depending on where your inlets are, you might be able to cut part of the bumper metal with a hole saw and route the pipes through that. much cleaner and straighter.
