Protege v2.5

Wasn't sure if he was active on here, so I figured I'd spread the word
this is from a GI over on 24/7

I'm gauging interest on building a SpeedCircuit turbo kit for the 3rd gen Protege (2001+).
It will not be compatible with the stock MSP turbo kit, however, an MSP will be able to upgrade to it.
Here's what I had in mind:
-Garret T3 60 Trim Turbo
-Custom SteedSpeed turbo manifold with external wastegate
-Tial external wastegate
-Greddy type RS BOV (or comparable)
-Mandrel bent aluminum piping
-Silicon couplers
-T-Bolt clamps
-Stainless steel oil lines and fittings
-2.5" Stainless steel downpipe with divorced wastegate dumptube
-Either a good FMIC or possibly an air:water intercooler
-All necessary hardware
Since everyone has their own preferences on engine management, none would be included with the setup.
However, you could use anything from a simple FMU for low boost to one of various engine management systems to fit your needs.
This turbo kit would be good for over 300hp.
The cost would be in the neighborhood of $3500 for this high quality kit.
Let me know what you guys think.

Dang, sounds like a good deal! If I had $4000 to dump on a turbo, this beats the shiz out of the stock MSP setup!
It's got all the upgraded goodies already included!

I would definitely trust Dino on one of his kits. He knows his stuff. That being said, I wouldn't recommend that kit without at least doing new rods.

Yeah, this is an "UPGRADE" kit. I wouldn't throw this on a stock motor either

oh thats true... never mind way too expensive for an upgrade kit... however it is nice sounding

Actually, it's a great price for an upgrade kit. It's high priced if all you want to do is add a turbo though.
If that's the case, go with stock MSP setup which can be had for about $1000
But even with stock MSp, id' want to upgrade to a better SMIC, better manifold, hardpipes with BOV, stainless lines, and already i'm over $1000 in upgrades. lol

If you go SMIC you'll need a new radiator. So instead of spending money on a new radiator AND a better SMIC, why not just buy an FMIC?

cause FMIC with stock MSP turbo = serious lag

Fixed!

the only things I need from his kit are the exhaust manifold, turbo, and downpipe....Which would be nice....but I could probably just get a steedspeed mani, a GT28rs, and upgrade to a GHL turbo-back for less money....
Do they still make GHL turbobacks for MSP's?

gt28rs doesn't fit on a steedspeed without modification. Talk to kamon8404 about that one...

No problem. We were going to do that install before he went out to the field this month. He tried to mate them, and no go.

off topic....but what was the issue? turbo too big or the flange itself wouldnt mate up?

+a million. it's the only reason I went with an FMIC. plus it's sexy :P
cause FMIC with stock MSP turbo = serious lag
oh really? lol you've never been in my car so you wouldn't know but trust me --what's lag?
YouTube - spooling speed in 5th
that's 5th gear going from vac to 7.5ish psi. god I love dual ball bearing turbos :P I've driven a 2.0 with a T3.. not a Protege though. I felt lag.. lots of lag.
lag? maybe on a poorly designed FMIC. putting a SMIC on a P5/ES/DX/LX/SE is a ridiculous expense.

Size of the FMIC makes a huge difference too. You got some people putting baby eaters on setups that really don't need it. Riding in Chris' car...I've never experienced lag. I've driven kamon8404's MSP with a multitude of different changes inbetween, including a 3" turbo back exhaust, and I don't notice much lag. I've driven terbow's air-water intercooled beast...but that's a little different. It has absolutely no lag. It's rediculous.

yeah mine hangs down past where the bumper would cover (bumper is stretched/trimmed to fit) but.. it's no baby eater. it's pretty thick though
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3138/2743847343_3d404030fe_b.jpg
apparently small enough that it isn't huge lag. I also used smaller piping on the hot side which should help things no?

oh damnit
this is the exact setup Ive got...(minus the external wastegate, running internal)
yay for being original? grr.....

Yeah, I believe it helps reduce lag.

It's not made to be an "upgrade kit" for the MSP...that was my original point. You'd basically sell your MSP kit and bolt on this one in it's place, or just bolt this onto an N/A protege.
IMO, there's not a single worthwhile part in the entire OEM MSP turbo kit, so rather than waste time upgrading that, it'd be better off just to start from scratch.
Regarding running my kit on a stock motor, you should honestly be fine. Just use proper engine management, keep the boost at 9psi or less, and you should never have an issue.
