View Full Version : Turbo install -- halfway there!!

So I finally decided to pull the trigger on the turbo install today. I've had all the parts for a couple weeks now but just couldn't find the time to start installing it, but today was the day.
Thus far I have drained all the fluids, installed new studs on turbo manifold, removed the stock exhaust manifold and j-pipe, removed the radiator and bumper, removed the oil pan, cleaned up new oil pan, installed new coolant by pass pipe, tapped the water source and installed little banjo bolt thingy and routed the coolant feed pipe to the front of the engine.
I could've done more, but I'm not shitting you (I'm SOOOO F*&#ING PISSED OFF ABOUT THIS!!!) the oil filter took me 2 hours to take off!!!!!!!! That little motherf*#$er would NOT come off no matter what I tried. I even made an extra trip to Advance Auto to buy multiple oil filter removal tools but all of them just kept on slipping off!! I can't find my camera but in the morning I'll take a picture of the filter and rest of the work I've done.
What I plan on doing first thing in the morning is to install new oil pan, tap the oil source, install oil cooler (this is gonna SUCK!!), install turbo itself and hook up all the lines. Then if I have time and energy left I'll try to assemble the mess of FMIC pipes and hook that up as well. I'm pretty sure I won't have time for the FPR or o2 clamp but we'll see..

Oh yeah, I almost forgot to ask this.
What grade of oil and heat range of plugs should I use now? Is 5W-30 oil and NGK ZFR6F-11 for the plugs gonna be ok?

I use a 5w40 but used 10w30 for about a year after turbocharging the car no trouble. I actually have.. lots more smokin with the 5w40, that much I know.
Those plugs will work great.
congrats on taking the plunge!

That was one of the first things I tried, but the filter would just crumble like it was made out of paper!! It was just a pain in the ass.. I mean I've replaced the damn thing like 15 times but this time it was just HELL!!

What brand so others can avoid?
I've never had this sort of trouble with:
- OEM (made in germany was all I'd ever get when I bought OEM)
- Denso
- Purolator PureOne (which now has a grippy coating on it making it even easier to remove)
and make sure you lube the seal when you install :)

Mobil1 (V6 version) oil filter. Never had problems of this sort before though. Here's what it looks like now that it's FINALLY off!! I used numerous screwdrivers, pliers, stupid useless oil filter removal tools, etc. I'm not sure how it finally come off, but it did.

And while I was out taking pics of the annihilated oil filter, I figured I'd take a few shots of my car the way it stands right now. I removed all the brackets possible and moved the exhaust as far I could to give me more room with that oil filter from hell.. you say something about the exhaust and you WILL die!!

Oil filter love me long time?
If I didn't have to install the MSP oil cooler, I totally would've just left that damn thing on after the first hour of struggle. This was before I introduced the screwdriver, pliers, and other devices of oil filter mass destruction of course..

So this project is turning out to be the complete opposite of what I thought it would be. Things that I thought would be a big pain in the ass (ex: exhaust mani removal, oil cooler install) are turning out to be super easy, but the easy things are giving me such a hard time!!
Last night I struggled with the oil filter for hours, and this morning I spent 3 hours driving around town trying to find a freakin' 29mm deep socket!!!! I needed it to install the oil cooler, but NO ONE had a 29mm of any kind! Everywhere I went had 27mm, 30mm, 32mm .. but no 29mm anywhere! I finally found it at this little part store and 30 minutes later the oil cooler was installed :)

Sorry to hear, but it'll all be worth it in the end! I too feel your pain on not finding parts.I went to Home Depot and Lowe's looking for a specific screw, didn't ahve it. Went to auto parts store(allI could find, none had it) Finally went to a little hole in the wall mom and pops hardware store and they had it.
They also told me they specifically make sure they carry EVERYTHING they can that the big chains don't. So, i'll be going there from now on!

Oil pan is on, all lines are hooked up to turbo. Next up is the FMIC.
That reminds me. How do you guys suggest I hook up the intake now? Where should I position the MAF and where in the hell is the IAT sensor gonna go?
khaosman
08-11-2008, 05:56 PM
You can always just pop the IAT in one of the holes leading to the fender until you get an intake with a proper grommet.
What kind of intake is it anyway? Some people run their MAF on the cold pipe, others don't.

It's not really an "actual" intake. I pretty much have a million pipes that I'm gonna use to make FMIC pipes and intake out of. Where does the IAT sensor usually go on turbo vehicles?

I just went outside and snapped a few quick pics of today's progress. It may not seem like much, but tapping and hooking up all the lines to and from the turbo took a little bit of time and effort.
So yea.. turbo is on, lines are hooked up, oil cooler is installed, all the lines and wires for gauges/o2 clamp are ready, new oil pan is on, and exhaust is back on with new hangers (w00t!!)
Left to do:
1) FMIC & intake
2) FPR & o2 clamp
3) gauges
4) slimfan and radiator
I think I should have everything ready by Wednesday, Thursday at the latest. Excitement is starting to set in!!

I was talking to a friend last night about putting the MAF on the hot or cold side and he mentioned something about voltage spikes on the MAF. Know anything about that?

This is today's progress.. very weak, I know. By the time I got home from work and went to buy some stuff, it didn't leave me with much time to work on the P5. So all I accomplished for today was mounting the FMIC and figuring out the cold pipe. Hot pipe is gonna be a little harder to put together, and I have no idea how I'm gonna fit the intake.
Can anyone take a pic of their intake on the MSP turbo? There's like NO room left because of the fan.

You have an automatic right? Any mods/upgrades so far to transmission or drivetrain?
Also, would anyone happen to know the dimensions on that MSP oil cooler? I bought a universal cooler for my tranny line, and it ended up being to thick to mount between the front of the radiator and the brace. I had to mount it on the outside of the brace (between the brace and bumper), which is fine, but its not catching as much cool outside air as it could. Mine measures 5"x15"x3/4" if I remember correctly.

If the question is directed towards me, then yes I do have an automatic. I have an auxillary tranny cooler, and I did attempt to upgrade the valve body. Problem was the guy scammed me and sent me an OEM body. Driver side axle and both bearings are brand new, so that's the only drivetrain "upgrade" I've done so far.
As for the MSP oil cooler, it's not really your typical oil cooler. It's more of a sandwich type of cooler that goes between the block and oil filter. It uses coolant to cool down the oil, as opposed to air like the conventional oil cooler uses (such as my tranny oil cooler). See pics for details and visual explanation.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!
She started :D
LoL!! I was SOOOO nervous to turn that key, and at first it did nothing.. then I put it in N and it started right up. So I then remembered that I had to mess with the shifter cable to get the intake on, and after getting it back into its original spot, it started in P like it's supposed to.
The good:
Idle is perfect, purrs like a kitten at ~850 rpm. Vacuum reads around 18 and fuel pressure is at 32 psi. I don't have the oil pressure gauge wired up yet, but that will be the first thing tomorrow morning.
The bad:
I have an oil leak :'( I traced it to the oil feed line where I used the tee to tap into the stock oil pressure sender. So I have to drain the oil again and redo the oil feed tee. I'm not sure what caused the leak, but loctite or new layer of teflon tape should hopefully fix it.
Still left on the list:
Relocate 2nd o2 sensor, wire gauges, and.. umm.. shit that's it!!

I did, and everything is fine except I have a coolant leak somewhere. It idles fine, it drives fine, but when I pop the hood after driving a bit there's all sorts of coolant evaporating off the turbo, and there's a little bit of build up on the j-pipe. I checked the in/out lines to/from turbo and I see no leaks, so I'm guessing it's internal?
I dunno, I honestly don't have a clue..
