To do the diagnostics on the keyless entry, you do the following (within 20-25 seconds):
0. Open the driver door, leave it open
1. Cycle the key between LOCK and ON 3 times
2. Press the door switch 3 times --the switch that triggers the dome light and the alarm if equipped. On the Protege, it's on the bottom of the b pillar.
3. The car will lock and unlock
3. Press a button on the remote twice. The car will lock and unlock again. If programming further remotes, press a button on them twice, the car will again lock and unlock.
4. Remote should work now.
If you cycle the key 4x (instead of 3x), it'll run a diagnostic test of the keyless entry system complete with horn beep and alarm arm/disarm. The horn beeps scared the crap out of me ha.
I have the flowchart from mazda that I can hopefully find and post in this thread.
