View Full Version : Spooled up Racing's COMPLETE Rx-7 build

SpooledupRacing

OK as most of you know I have had a bit of problems with my last engine I built.

I did a COMPLETE build on the engine with all NEW mazda parts and I did not replace the oil control rings (hard metal rings). The engine ran fine but smoked and used oil profusly.

I bought new rings and tore the engine down again.. I built it and when I started it I had a miss... after pulling the motor I noticed that the front housing had a LARGE couge in the rotor housing from the apex seal sliding forward on the initial start up..

Now I am out a rotor housing and an apex seal..

So I have decided to start OVER...

I am going to buy:
BRAND NEW rotor housings
Rx-8 Eccentric shaft (1lb lighter)
possibly do lightweight rotors and matching counter weights
etc
etc

I also am going to finish the project by fixing all my electric issues, installing the turbo transmission, turbo LSD diff, new bushings, 5 lug hubs, new wider rims with tires etc.

This is going to be a long journey but I am ready..

here is a link to my last build

OK no insipid posts here please.. lets stay on topic!!!

Well I have sat down and got some pricing laid out for parts... so far I have a large list and I may buy ALL new housings and all new irons too..

this is going to be an expensive build... but it will be preaty when its done..

I promise u that!

pro5x2
08-07-2008, 01:27 PM
Yeah, but, if you don't spend the money and go all new now, how soon would you be replacing the used parts you picked up?

I can't wait to see/hear this thing!!

SpooledupRacing
08-07-2008, 02:00 PM
Well thats why I am going new and I will get to re-port my housings and spend more time on the sanding, smoothing, and finishing of the ports.

my list from the begining

SpooledupRacing
08-07-2008, 03:15 PM
the other list of stuff that I need

Black interior door panels
passenger side door (s4 or s5)
passenger side fender (s4 or s5)
passenger side FTP lens
black dash
black carpet
black rear speaker covers

5 lug hubs
LSD T2 diff
turbo driveshaft
turbo axles for LSD (if that matters)
turbo 5spd transmission (good trans please known with good gears)

SpooledupRacing
08-07-2008, 04:20 PM
My other option is instead of buying the Racing beat suspension kit (frt/rear sway bars and lowering springs)

buy the frt/rear sway bars from Racing beat, adjustable end links from racing beat and a set of

K-Sport Kontrol coil overs

08-07-2008, 04:27 PM
is the only difference in the RX-8 shaft that its lighter? and, i hope this build goes a LOT better for you.

SpooledupRacing
08-07-2008, 04:34 PM
yes it is 1lb lighter and it is almost half the price of a T2 shaft but that is the only difference I know of....

and the build was just fine I goofed and knew it and did not go back to fix it before I bolted the engien down.. I figured it would be fine (just like when I put the bad control rings in.. I figured it would be fine)

what would it take to build a 12000rpm+ rotary? that would be sweet

SpooledupRacing
08-07-2008, 05:16 PM
mine was build for 10K matter a fact I know I was over 10K at one time...

I may have the e-shaft nitrated and hardened because that is the only part that lets go at the high rpms..

remember the eshaft, flywheel, clutch, and pulley is th eonly thing that is going that fast.. all the internals are going 1/3 the speed (the shaft spins 3 times in order for the rotor to make one full revolution) so when the shaft is at 12K the internals are spining at 4K

Frt strut assemblies are out
frt sway bar and sway bar links are out
frt 4 lug hubs removed
passenger side tie end and ball joint are removed (both need replacing)
front bumper is removed

next step will be remove the front passenger fender, remove the intercooler and all piping, remove everything from the engine bay THEN onto other things.

removed the passenger fender
pushed the bent piece of frame back out where the fender got hit (looks like NEW)
soaked the rear suspension and brakes down with PB Blaster

SWEET.... lol

btw I have not figured out if I am gonna run Megasquirt 2 or haltec, or mo-tec or microtec..

so many choices and I HATE tuning lol

I highly recommend the microtech...it is not difficult to install and from what I have seen of the software so far it is great...its also basically designed around tuning rotary engines, which is a major plus

haltech has better software from what I have seen too, but I dont have any experience with it....but from what everyone says its way better to tune than the microtech, however the tradeoff is it costs a few hundred bucks more

the megasquirt is the cheapest option, however it is also the most difficult as the software is all open source and not a 'all in one' software package...its a lot of research, and a lot of preparation, however it may wind up being able to give you more control....its not for the feint of heart, and if you hate tuning and/or are not experienced in that field it would probably take you a lot longer to get the car up and running, let alone to its full potential, because of that

i have heard good things about megasquirt and that is probably what i will run, but i just don't like having to build an ems. haltech is a lot easier and has definitely proven itself. i will probably do megasquirt and just rough through the install. i need someone local to help me out with it though.

Ok so today I got my hubs and my fender.. I have to admit I am a bit disappointed however I got some stuff to work with so its a start

Here are the 5 lug hubs with calipers and just brakes

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_154.jpg

The rotors obviously are not going to be used the calipers I was expecting to use however they are not worth anything to me because they are in rough shape so I will use them as core money toward a new (rebuilt) set from the shop and the hubs are COMPLETELY rusted to the rotors.. right now they are soaking in PG blaster.. I will coat them again in the morning and if I cant get them off tomorrow I will take them in to the shop and put the torch on them to heat them up and get them apart..

they will take LOTS of cleanup and wire wheels etc to get them back to useable however with some new studs and bearing I am confident that they will be useable.

and here is the passenger fender.. the good part of the deal.. it is in GREAT shape, not worried about the paint because it will be COMPLETELY sanded down put a gel on and primered so I can paint it along with the body in the spring.

OK so the hubs are not coming off the rotors, I have done everything except torch the rotors off the hubs..

So I contcted the guy and he is gonna send me another set of HUBS ONLY I guess when those arrive I can conntinue

Today I bought a set of Urethane transmission bushings so those should show in a few days.

and tonight I will get to working on pulling the rear end apart

OK so today I got back to work on the 7..

Here is a few updates..

Front control arms had the bushings removed from them. I then cleaned them up with a wire wheel and painted them with a high gloss black paint.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_242.jpg

After that I installed the new energy suspension bushings and put them back in the car.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_247.jpg

I then took the rear spindle
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_209.jpg

removed the backing plate and took them to a shop to have the bushing and the wheel bearing and hub pressed out of it (done mid last week)

I brought it home and also cleaned it up with a wire wheel (again mid last week)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_210.jpg

and today I painted them
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_245.jpg

Next will be to get some new ball joints, and new tie rod ends that way I can get the front spindles back on

then I will have the new rear bearings and hub pressed back together and then get the new bushings put in.

So yeah its progress but until I get a trans, diff and axles I am about done with putting parts back on (oh and new suspension)

it shouldn't be quite that much, since I'm not going ALL out on it, however itll probably be upwards of 10-15k definately (lol, I'm already upwards of 10k into the msp, and considering I paid 14k on purchasing the car that is saying something lol)

if it's anything like a miata rear end (I know they're very similar, the damn things nearly bolt up directly), the drive shaft and axles could be easily done alone (I know cuz I've done 'em), and with a good jack the pumpkin should drop right out once you unbolt the mounts.

So... what's the holdup? ;)

the prop shaft needs to come out before you can do that anyway. But yes, I would want an extra pair of hands to drop the trans as well.

oh yeah. Esp. w/ the trans. Do you have a trans jack? Totally worth it if you can jack the car up high enough. I'm going to be swapping mine (again) this winter, however I'm doing the engine too, so chances are everything's coming out and going in, in one piece. I'm also swapping the diff, so I feel your pain haha.

I borrowed 1 of these from a buddy of mine:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=39178

I'm sure with your connections you could find something like it to borrow. I was working with jackstands when I did it the 1st two times (this last winter) as well.

dude I couldn't imagine installing a rear wheel drive transmission like that

I had the hardest time reinstalling my transmission and its gotta be less than half the weight of your tranny! I spent hours with that and theres plenty of times that I'm surprised the tranny didnt just fall onto my legs and crush them >.<

an extra pair of hands FTMFW!

ok no pictures tonight just a quick update..

outer tie ends on
ball joints on
front spindles painted black and put on the b joints (awaiting new mounting bolts)

this weekend the trans, diff, axles will come out of the car as well as the rear sway bar and rear suspension

SpooledupRacing
09-06-2008, 09:51 PM
OK so today back to work.. I removed:

transmission
differential
axles
driveshaft
rear subframe

So now that I have everything off I can begin to put the poly bushings in and get the more done..

I also have the front spindles on and the ball joints bolted down to the arms and spindle, and the tie rod end is sitting in the spindle as well..

Today I ordered up:
S4 TURBO LSD
S4 turbo axles
BRAND NEW set of KYB AGX struts

Once everything comes in I will get pictures and get things installed back in the car..

I also received a FREE front bumper today (those Forza Motorsport loves will recognise this

Mariah Front bumper (yes I have the screen)

Diff is off.

Rear control arms, trailing arms and rear control links are off

subframe is gutted and ready to be cleaned up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v88/turboTSI/RX7%20BUILD/0_IMAGE_308.jpg

So the next step is to clean everything up rear good, have the old bushings pressed out and the new bushings pressed in and then paint everything black.

OK so I took my control arms in to have the last 2 bushings pressed out and have 1 installed..

I got the call saying they were done and the total was 35.00

I get there and they removed 1 bushing and replaced it but the large bushing that goes to the subframe was still intact.. they said that they could not get it out..

I went home and burned it out HOWEVER the new bushings wont go in because there is a collar that needs to be pressed out..

anyways pics of the rubber on fire

I am waiting to hear back from MMR on them because well I received 4 mounts that match IDENTICALLY in size (length, hat depth, diameter, etc) and I go the DTSS elims..

the 4 mounts are 1 pr of diff mounts and 1 pair of rear subframe mounts but even though they are physically the exact same part the subframe mounts were 5.00 more. and I don't know why.

anyways tomorrow I pick up my LSD and axles, I hope to get all the mounts installed and then I can move on..

Here's my qualm with this: define 'complete'. Because when I think complete, I think quality performance parts. KYBs don't even blip on the radar for that...

Maybe it's because I'm a slut for suspension... just wondering. What's the purpose of all this? Track? Drag? Autox? General fun mobile? Just curious.

maybe it is just me but i dont even think anythign about quality when i read the title....it just says that it is his complete build thread....all that means to me is that he is tracking his build to completion...i dont see what that has to do with the quality of the parts...that and there is nothing wrong with KYB...I mean they aren't top of the line, but they arent garbage either

Complete build means I will be posting EVERYTHING I do from start to finish.. aka COMPLETE..

IME on RX7's do quite well on AGX struts and performance springs.

I could have went with coil overs (like K-sport) but honestly I have no need for all of that..

The amount of track use and what I want out of the car agx will do just fine.

remember this is just the start... again Complete... suspension, interior, body, engine... EVERYTHING..

fair enough, maybe I'm reading too much into this.

And... depending on what you compare them to, they aren't that great.

BTW, I wasn't able to find any info on the AGZ... do you mean the AGX? If so, I know a set in the sentra community and a set in the miata community have been put on shock dyno's in the past, and the found that 1) no AGX is valved the same. Even both fronts and both rears are can be totally different, 2) the adjustments are very inconsistent, and 3) on more than 1 occasion, a full sweep on the adjustments made such a negligible change on the valving to be nearly non existent.

Actually I think KYB has a better Rep than K-Sport anyways....My bro did his Suby suspension with Springs and KYBs and worked out just fine.
