View Full Version : Transmission Issues
Ok Well I think it is time to fix up my damn transmission.
I have been having horrible chatter, clutch slippage, and violent engine vibrations for quite some time. Last night I installed the AWR front mount, as well as the side mount insert. LEts just say every mount I took out was ripped. The violent vibrations are now gone, but my clutch is extremely bad. If I get near 5 in vacuum, the engine starts to shudder or will just slip. Downshifting into third, if I dont blip the throttle the RPMs will just settle at idle while I am in gear. In 4th or 5th, anything past 3250 rpms will slip the clutch. Basically, it is EXTREMELY easy for me to slip my clutch, and extremely hard for me to stay above 55 going up a hill on the parkway.
And guess what, at 46k miles I am suffering the horrible 3rd gear grind. I completely cringe every time I shift into third.
So here are my questions.
First, what clutch should I be looking for? I have a SPEC hybrid now, and I hate it. It has chattered since the day it was installed and really just sucked for driving everyday. I am thinking the exedy stage one, since the most I will EVER run on this motor is probably 8 psi from my T3.
Second, what do I do about the third gear grind? I cant recall if its the shift fork or synchro or what. I dont really know too much about transmissions so I guess I wil ahev to start researching.
Third, what else do I need to do to this trans? I changed the clutch once before under the guidance of MPNick, but I dont know if I will be dropping the trans myself this time becuase I really really really just want this trans to run nicely so I can get my car to actually be a bit enjoyable.
I got buried...bumpity boo

Im just waiting for pdhaudio or focus to jump in here...
I also have a grind...only mine is when shifting into second and probably only occurs about 10-15% of the time...but it still sucks when it happens. If I remember correctly that is typically a synchro issue...Unfortunately I know nothing about transmissions or whether that can be easily fixed or not...
bump for answers

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your troubles. Chatter is caused by a number of reasons - contamination on the disc (oil), misalignment, worn flywheel, worn disc... Most of the Protege's problems tend to lean towards the flywheel warping, but could be the combo of the disc/flywheel.
Grinding into gear most likely indicates the synchro is bad. 2nd to 3rd gear takes one of the most abuse. You won't be able to tell unless you tear the trans down and inspect. You could try to rev match for the time being but thats not really a very good fix.
Hope that info helps.

i dont know about the OPs issue but I only get the grind going from 1st to 2nd, never from 3rd down to 2nd. I guess I'll have to have someone check the trans for me...bummer

Sychro is one unit that controls both gears, so 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th. If you have a problem on one side and not the other might isolate it to that particular gear synchro. Generally the synchro has to bring the other gear up to speed for easy engagement. If the fork goes bad that could make the gear harder to shift, but it usually causes the engagement to fail and pop out (usually do the bent misalignement not moving the slider on the synchro to engage the gear).
These are just suggestions of what it might be, you'll never really know unless you look at everything there.

thanks for the info, that was really informative. I'm definitely going to have someone check it out soon....that is if I don't just try to have someone build a better trans for me to swap in there. Thanks again.
it has to be the 2-3 synchro then, since I never get the grinding in 4th and I occasionally get a grind in 2nd. It grinds when I downshift from 4th to 3rd tho..

be very careful shifting when grinding!!!
I just had a $1700 grind going from 1st to 2nd.
It only grinded twice then nothing, I couldn't get it into
1st or 2nd. It ended up being the brass gears and hub assem.
aa costly fix IMO.
I'd have it looked at soon

And I'm still not sure they told you the truth on that... especially since you only had, what- 30k miles on it?

I was at gingerman yesterday and guess what..... no third gear anymore:leghump::leghump:
everything seemed weird after that too but up on the trailer it went, and today I have no first or reverse (which made it fun to get off the trailer) and also its in gear when in neutral??????
so off I go searching the forums be back next season:smileyr:

I don't know all the things that was wrong but I was smart enough to get
my old parts back.
BTW I see your going to be online @7:00pm tonight on the news channel HUH!!!
Pat .... our TMF gas buddy LOL
it looks like I am going to be bringing the MP3 to the dealer next week to get an exedy clutch installed. If I tell them to do the 2-3 synchro as well, are they gonna bang me an extra couple hundred?? About how much is the synchro, and does it involve them taking apart the whole tranny?

they'll definitely charge you extra for that...even though you are replacing the clutch they'll have to remove the transmission to get at the synchros.

Yah, I doubt they'd do the synchro, you'd need a rebuild.
I'd just source a different trans.

hey Pat.... I thinnk I remeber you poping third gear a time or two. What are you running for your solution now???
also, when I put it in nutral its like its in 1st and when its in first or reverse it bogs down and goes nowhere, and yes nothing at all in third???
there is alot of ideas out there and big big range of $$$$ but not of lot of follow ups (except when broken again).
I dont have a high horsepower application but hi abuse application. I have been having third gear pop out alot at gingerman (past couple of years) I even filled my front and rear mounts with epoxy and filld the tranny with lightweight shockproof lube to help with this (and it did some) But finnaly this past test and tune I went to put it in third (from 2nd) and there was nothing at all there (it also poped out three times in earlyer sessions in that day).
HELP I have yet to pull the thing to see what it looks like inside but I guess I have till next race season.:worshippy::worshippy::worshippy:

why not? It would actually be cheaper than fixing it probably...You could source a used trans for real cheap. Just get a junkyard trans for the time being....find a smashed pro and snatch it's trans...or better yet try to find an MSP one with a LSD (Actually scratch that last comment....you'll never find one....but more importantly the stock LSD will snap in half unless you have it welded properly)

I run HiBoost billet third and fourth gears, but now I lost fifth gear... perhaps due to an assembly issue.

exactly. To crack the trans open and buy parts to fix your issue likely will cost more than simply buying a used transmission.
You'll save hundreds.
He's got an MP3 AFAIK, so he doesn't need to worry about the LSD.

PAR everyday of the week. NOT THE GTX... avoid it. Its hardly any better. PAR will take time but WORTH EVERY PENNY

F$%K TBK ! those gears are bogus
Like Pat said, the option is PAR, but I don't ever see myself spending that much on something that definitely could break if I end up making my horsepower goal. :)

What's up with the TBK/Hiboost gears ? Why do you say that?

shit I should start a thread, but I am up in the air about buying a used 02.5 (with tsb update) trans or spending 900 facking dollars on one gear PLUS the synchros and whatever else it will need to get this done right....
opinions and life story's are very welcome here folks.

Hi Can anyone please tell me if a ZL Transmission work on a B3 Engine? If yes, are there any modifications or will it work perfectly.
Thank in advance,
Darrel
