PM Privileges

Unfortunately, due to the possibility of a repeat of a spammer signing up and using the PM system to spam (I *JUST* caught a new user who has a US IP address but their e-mail is a known PM spammer sign up), I have lowered REGISTERED USERS abilities. They can now only send ONE PM every 30 seconds instead of two. This shouldn't effect more than 1% of users here that have good intentions, but beware.

If you're a DONATING MEMBER (green user name) this rule does NOT apply to you.

Another reason to donate? ;)
(Unless spammers start donating, LOL)

what is the max number of posts you get out of spammers before they get caught? just thinking that maybe you could limit sending PM's unless you have a certain number of legitimate posts or something...

i usually find spammers before they even post their garbage. Such as been the case about 10 times.

that's precisely the idea. If they make posts, posts get sent to akismet, akismet runs spam detection algorithms on them. Akismet doesn't handle private messages so the new tactic is private message spam.

I'm also pretty sure the PM spam is smart enough to avoid moderators and admins.. I can't say I've ever gotten any but I know some have.

We just have to implement "user levels" or.. crap what is the actual term for it. I dunno either way yes that's what we'll do. Junior members no private messages allowed until post count is 5 or so, then they auto become Senior Members

And to answer your question, spammers that make actual posts usually get caught by akismet very quickly (hence having akismet stop checking when they get to 5 posts).

thats pretty much what i was thinking, just didnt know how to put it in writing.

just keep what ever # posts required a secret, so they cant figure it out and start posting some random crap to build thier post count

Its more of a scam then spam isnt isnt it? i doubt any of them sell the phones or products they say they do

An idea, not sure if presented here, but, links of any sort are not allowed to be posted by anyone with less than a certain post count.

which is why i've been devoting time nearly every day to comb thru ALL registrations and check for possible spammers.
