View Full Version : New FMIC Setup

Me and a friend of mine recently fabricated a fmic kit for his turbo d15 del sol. A few of the things we did "wrong" (Note: The system still works better than we ever imagined it would.) was #1: we used aluminized steel instead of aluminum piping. #2: we used silicone couplers in places where we should have had the piping welded together into one piece. My first question to you guys is things i should look out for aside from these two factors on my MSP. I'm going to be using either a Vibrant Performance Bar/Plate or Tube/Fin FMIC (whichever one sam doesnt use) and a box of assorted aluminum bends and straights. My second question is MAF relocation to the pressure side of the system.....

- Is there any specifications on how far away the MAF should be from the TB and or fmic?
- Where should the BOV be placed in the system related to the FMIC and MAF?
- Can i run a recirculated BPV on this setup or will and atmospherically vented BOV be needed?

My third question is what diameter of piping will be needed? So far the only piece of piping i have decided i need is one the length and diameter of my MAF to replace the gap in the injen cold air once the MAF is moved to the pressure side of the system.

And anymore general knowledge that could be provided would be appreciated.

I have mine MAF about halfway down the cold pipe. Blow off valve can be pretty much anywhere before the MAF, just not directly next to it, to try to avoid too much turbulence. On mine it is off the hot pipe(like the stock setup), but I have seen others fit it on the cold pipe as well.

You don't need to vent to atmosphere for this setup, it just allows you to do so without stalling if you choose to.

My MAF is as close to the TB as possible and as far from the BOV as possible.

This has eliminated the Rich problem with running a BOV on a Mass Air car.

I mounted my MAF in my apartment and put in a MAP.... and ECU......

/sarcasm

you going to stick with the stock SCU or some kind of tuning?

Plan on going with the unichip set at 10 psi

i find this works best. Assuming that you want to vent, with these cars recirc would be best.

for piping go with like 10% larger than your compressor outlet (usually 2-2.25"), and for the tb side of the ic 2.5" is fine (you want the cold side larger to compensate for the colder slower moving air

if you recirc a bpv you wont need a bpv. the only reason for both is if u want the sound and the maf is on the intake (pre-pressure pipes), i have no bpv just recirc.

brian is correct on the maf/bov thing

The Plumbing size is important but it is more important that the bends are free of kinks and that you have as few of them as possible.

Form will always yield to Function unless you have $$$

all of the piping will be mandrel bent aluminum so im not worried about air flow, im going to make as few bends as possible and try to steer away from making any radical bends

Sounds like a Plan STAN..
