ok its not completely done but i just soldered like 60 tiny ass connections.
i just have to connect the diodes (if i can ever get the howto), all the unconnected wires are the aem ones. and the heatsthrinks arent shrunk.
ill never make one again, for anyone, ever. unless u have alot of cash :)
soon. soon.

hey brother. I just got a case of some neat new wire connectors...they are a little bulkier but they have additonal inlets for splicing multiple pieces into one section. It's like a mini-multiple outlet connector.
I'll get some pics for you...it's how I plan on re-doing my haltech system.

yea we have really strict emissions and i really have no way around it. it needs to be done. i can make them for people i dont mind, it just takes a while and is a pita but that would all wash out when i hand over the bill ;)
I won't pass emissions anyways, so my way around it is to hand my friend 50 bucks and say thanks for passing me ;)

ha we dont have those anymore, we used to then they just dissapeared. so sad.
how would you going about putting a wire in one of the empty holes in a stock harness? Just simply stickin it in doesn't quite work too well..
terbow
02-04-2006, 05:31 PM
im confused what your asking?
let me explain. The P5 ecu expects a signal from the VTCS solenoid. I used to have a P5 ECU in the car becuase of the less agressive timing making it easier to safely tune the car. Not only does the MP3 not have VTCS or a solenoid, but they dont even have the wire in the harness where it would be. If I could insert a wire in that hole, then hook that up to the solenoid that I purchased, I could run the P5 ECU without a cel.
terbow
02-04-2006, 05:43 PM

I haven't spent a lot of time staring at the harness but are the pins similar to those of a computer molex connection? Kinda where you add a "tree" looking pin to the wire and push through enough for it to lock in to place?
terbow
02-04-2006, 09:31 PM

yes it similar. lil drifferent style i believe cause its longer but same idea.

terbow, here's the connectors I was talking about.
On the 2port pieces you just strip the wire and slide it in the hole. If you're doing something like stereo upgrades and you use a multi-port piece you can keep stuffing wires in it everytime you need to add a source or remote piece....it's really neat.
I got a case of about 800 in different sizes.

wiring isnt that hard so i wouldnt sacrifice the harness cause then youl have a hard time selling it. it IS extra money.
so what i did and find an ecu harness and old ecu. sure its a pain and makes u want to smash things but its worth it. or just wire it in an wait for steve to fake the sensors.
u have a built motor comein. dont play around with piggy backs. make daddy proud and run 25 psi.

Ok, anywhere near the glovebox is out of the question. There's some space under the cupholders as mentioned, but I'd have to measure for exact positioning. I have that piece out right now so I can measure tomorrow if you'd like. Just remind me tomorrow and I'll go do it. Keep in mind though that there *is* a bit of heat there, but nothing some 80 or 60mm computer fans can't take care of.
You also have under the passenger seat, where my Sirus tuner box is. There's a vent located under the seat which may help with cooling. However, be sure no one will spill drinks there or kick the unit.
There's a slight space under the dash where the foot wells are. There's an ABS plastic piece on each side that's shaped kinda like a triangle where the vents come out. I have some AVC wires hidden there but I'm unsure if you could wedge the unit there.
Driver's side seat is the same deal as passenger side.
There's also space behind the radio console piece on top of the vents where it could be wedged and hidden, but the depth is unknown to me at the moment.
I keep remembering the TC interior, as I've torn in to those so many times when doing installs.
The backseat area is pretty limited but there is a gap between the back dash and plastic overlay. Issue there is heat and lack of ventilation.
You could mount in trunk but that's a LOT of wires to run down the door sill or under carpet, plus that kills ease of use when tuning.
I can't really picture the size you just told me right now for some reason, but I'll go at it tomorrow and see.
A door panel may be another option but again, wires would be an issue.
I'll go look and see when I wake up.

02-06-2006, 11:37 PM
cool thanks. i was thinkin under pass seat too cause theats where my tuner was too. i can bend up a shield or box of sorts for it too so im not worried about spills really. i was just iffy on how to run all 30 wires from the seat to the ecu. i have my rcas on the pass side under the sills so i didnt know if it would interefer with all those signal wires from the aem and make radio noise.
for some reason I was thinking the AEM looked like the emanage and I was about to suggest doing a flush mount in the door of the glovebox, but google images says ye ol AEM is just another metal box like the rest of the standalones out there.

Do not run these wires anywhere near signal wires for an amp. Do it two ways depending on amount of wires needing to be extended or run:
a) Relocate RCAs to driver's side. If the amp's just powering subs, interference will be minimal as long as decent wires are being run.
b) Remove pass seat during install, which you'll need to do anyway, along with center console. Run AEM wires up towards console, back to the front of the car, and to the right where the ECU is, assuming these are going to the ECU. The only tight area you'll hit is where the little armrest box is.

I was going to suggest putting it on the back side of the golve box so you can still use the glove box and will be able to get to the AEM when needed the only thing is that with the added weight you will have to be easy when opening it and closing it. that is where i would try to put it or at least see ho it would fit & look. Depends on how you route the wires though.

the AEM is a fantastic unit, and when you start off with a rough auto-tune, change the auto-tune settings to be more finite, then turn on O2 feedback control you can get pretty damn close to your target O2's with little or no effort.

thats what my dads friend who is a mechanic used to do before he got hurt and was forced to retire. he used to do side jobs and even in the winter in the driveway. set up the space heater(a nice one) and get to work.
p.s. and this is when we used to have winter. not like this year where it's just a chilly fall. hah

in the driveway? hmm. maybe ill have to look into that.
Any chance you can scan in an example harness wire with the connection you had to use? I'm curious as to how they go in and hold to the harness.
Sweet, mine should be done soon too. Mine will be mounted in the glovebox though i think.
Are you going to run staged boost?

not sure what u mean exactly but i have some pics. basically, some wires are shared (like reference, and pwr wires), the sensor wires need to be cut cause the piggy or standalone ems uses the sensors.
for example the MPI you cut say a red wire, then u have an ecu side and sensor side, the mpi goes to both ends and kind of intercepts in the middle, whereas the standalone would only use the sensor side and cut the ecu right out of the loop altogther.

Er, I understand that.
I was moreso talking about the harness connectors you mentioned near the very first of the thread.

oh, well i dont know offhand, id have to kinda make something up. i was thinkin like gm weatherpacks. maybe put sensor side with a male, and a female on the ecu side and ems side. so u can switch them out.

i wired my mpi 3 times and, even though it was that much fun being stuck in there soldering wires ... i didn't mind. not that i enjoyed working on it that much and the oh so lovely smell of burning flux, but it wasn't that bad. i also kinda like doing that kind of stuff :)
if i can get my hand on a spare connector like that i may make the same thing for my mpi so i can disconnect it or something. just for the hell of it
terbow

yea its not bad cept the end with the pins. that made me sad.

lol when i blew my engine last year, one shop rebuilt it and another (closer to my house) put the engine back in the car but fucked something up and the engine overheated right away. so right now, that guy is paying for another engine rebuild. it's almost done ... about a week or two and i should have the car back
