View Full Version : Silicone Hose Cleaning?

I've got plenty of HoseTechniques hosts throughout the bay that I'll be cleaning during the rebuild but I don't want to further dull or discolor the hoses. Anyone have any decent cleaners for this specifically?
Please note that I had a very large issue with blowby that ended up blowing out of the turbo -> ic bpv nipple and other areas, so there's a LOT of dried up oil staining the hoses.
I've tried soap/water with okay success and different types of "trim cleaner" and polish stuff while I was doing the wipers and such during cleaning. I didn't listen to my own advice, "Simple Green has no place in car cleaning", and tried it on some hoses. GAH!#!@$
Anyway, I'm not concerned about "safety" of the cleaner, just want to keep the color consistant and undulled, which Simple Green didn't do.

Are you crazy, Try it..
I have a $50,000 Dick With Wheels, I clean it with armour all, I have for three years. The Hoses are fine.
I Do not use it on anything else..

I will NOT use Armor All on a car, even if I hate the person.
Withouth goolging, I'm assuming "Spray Nine" is similar to Simple Green. That correct?

Brian: Google "Armor All Bad" or similar and you'll find place after place that mention Armor ruins materials.

armor all sucks..it soaks into whatever youre using it on and essentially dries it out.

I would use a gentler cleaner, like 303 Aerospace Cleaner, and scrub the hoses a bit with a cheap MF towel. Then dress with your favorite protectant. I like to use Meg's NXT Tech Protectant on engines. Here's an example, cleaned for the first time in 11 years, with 303 and diluted Meg's All Purpose Cleaner 5:1, and dressed with NXT TP.

Be sure to have a bunch of cheap MF towels handy though...because once they look like this, they'll be about worthless. And BTW, MF is better than cotton, because it won't lint all over the engine bay. Plus, cotton towels often get snagged on engine parts, and the threads get pulled out.

two things:
1) I only use MF towels now.
2) Nice hood prop.

ahmuhgah! If you use regular towels to take care of your car, stop now. Target has some cheap MF towels with decent fiber and sewn edges. On top of that, they're charcoal and white with soft orange stitching. Then get the more expensive towels with better quality fibers for waxing and such.

when it comes to silicone hoses,I just stick them in the solvent parts washer at work.I did one the other day that was all kinds of bad.It was a F-650 diesel, the turbo had let loose, and he drove on it till it finally sized the turbo.
that oil was fucking gross.
they looked new when done.

A strong solvent will likely dry out the hoses, which could lead to cracking down the road. There are often multiple ways to go about doing things, but you have to decide what's more important - doing it fast, or doing it right. Cleaning the hoses with a gentle cleaner by hand is certainly not the fastest way...but how much time will it save by not having to replace hoses later?

Yeah, I dont want to replace all of these hoses any time soon due to how much they were. It's the show kit, and HT charges a pretty price for them.
