I've often seen people mentioning this when talking about tires, but where exactly do you find them? On the websites I've checked out, I haven't seen anything regarding this.
Also, what exactly does the number mean? I know that the higher the number, the better (ie the longer the tire will 'last'), but other than that, does it denote anything else?

The tread wear # is a guide as to how long a tire will last ,However each manufacturer grades their tires differently . I do know that a TW of 50 is a race tire and 500 will last forever . The lower the number the better the grip but lose thread wear , It is all about comprimise . If someone knows more about this post away

treadwear is basically just that. the higher the number the longer they'll last. I dont beleive they put treadwear ratings on snow tires, but give an estimate of how long they'll last. Now one thing you should remember, this isn't universal and companies varie on they're ratings. So you shouldn't campare tires between companies all the time based on it, but more of tires within a company. You can normally find the treadwear on the sidewalls of the tires. Hope that answered any doubts you had.

Mack, Vindication - thanks! That's what I was looking to find out.
So, if a tire of one brand has a treadwear rating of 280, while another brand indicates theirs is 280 (same class of tire), it doesn't necessarily mean that they will last an equal length of time under the same driving conditions...
This begs the questions then: Since this is all arbitrary between companies, why have it? Also, is there an industry standard as such that will give unbiased information in this regard?

Well the Uniform Tire Quality Grading(UTQG) is a US government mandated tire rating system. Each company uses a control tire to base there ratings. Also, dont forget that roads, alignment and your driving habits affect the tread life and may be more or less of the stated treadlife. But typically I guess a difference shouldn't be too big between comapnies. I guess if you want to compare between two companies and see if their treadwear ratings are similar, choose 2 different tires in two categories (ie: summer and allseason) and look at both for the 2 companies and see the differences. If you want me to explain a little better let me know

I notice on the front tire you got a slight cut off at an angle do you know how that happen cuz at one point and time i took my 205/40 17 off before i left Alaska and i had this weird \ on the inside of the tire but couldn't figure out what is was rubbing for the life of me. How are those 18's anyway i been wanting to get 18's ever since i bought my 17's i think they fill the wheel well a lot better and look like they belong.

thats the whole reason i got fuzion 400 tread wear tires cuz i was going through the lost set i had way to quick and had to try something new the only set back is that with the harder rubber my corner limit has gone up some but not enough to bother me to much just makes me more cautious.

just another note don't compare tire ratings between different sizes either, each size is numbered differently even within a company so when comparing the tw number only do it with in the same size tires
