View Full Version : (Performance) How To: Make Your Own Short Throw Shifter

#1 remove the shifter from the car , In my case I got a 2nd one to do this , This one is from a 1st gen Protege Mark the shifter so you can line it up after you make the cut needed to extend the shifter .

You will also need a piece of 1" round bar stock with a 1/2 inch hole bore in it

Now you have to cut between the ball and the tube ,this is why you maked for the orentation of the shifter

Now you have to weld the parts together . You will have to taper the ends of the 2" piece of steel in order to weld it .I had my Dad mig weld it for me . I went alittle nuts with the grinder to give the shifter a better shape ,sI forgot to take a pic showing the welds

This is the final pics with the bushing in place , I just have to paint it and install it . Once I have it installed I will take more pics

Pics are up shifter below the ball is extended by 3/4 " . this will shorten the throw above the ball . You will have to trim the heat sheild behind the shifter to install this .

I made one before but used thin walled tube and after 3 1/2 years of use it rusted through the pipe . I dont think that this is going to rust out
