I'm not sure if this is an engine or a mod related thread, so here it is.

I've seen a few pics of the timing belt cover being either cut off or otherwise modded, such as on Brian's P5. Did a machine shop cut it for you? I'm diggin the look, just wanna know how to get it done similarly.

So you dont have to take the valve cover off to get to adjustable cam gears.

Very carefully with a grinding wheel and sander. I don't know what type of wheel to get, but there is one that is perfect for the job.
My buddy did this with his SC'ed Civic Si. I think he used a hole-saw type drill bit for both sides, then used the grinder to connect them.

Yes thats me in the background

I'd use a Table Band-Saw and then grind down the lip.

Be sure to leave the mount for the Cam Position Sensor.
Be sure to not drop the cover on the side of the cam position sensor.

I cannot speak for Brian, but I did not mind it when I drove w/o power steering. You get used to it, and I even felt like I had more control over the car's response to the road.

Suprisingly dificult at any speed less than 2 MPH. DrySteering is interesting. At any speed above 10 Mph, it's very acceptable.

Bear in mind that I run 215/35/Z18 so it's expected to be harder the wider you go. Stock MSP will be very easy.

The basic idea for you to think about is when you remove the pump. Loop the inlet and outlet of the rack with a piece of PS Friendly hose. The Fluid trapped inside will keep everything happy... If not it will rust and become contaminated.

(blarg)

Unless you plan to remove the A/C as well, I would not recomend this. They make a short belt that fits Proteges that have no A/C. The belt just spins the pump, they do not however have a belt that runs only the A/C as that was never a configuration that was offered. Plus the P/S is the tensioner for that belt...

Indeed. I've had my fair share of PSless cars and with the driving I do, I'll keep it.

Anyway, I'll be taking my valve cover off tomorrow, as I'm supposed to be getting some dremel goodies and I may take the belt cover over to a machine shop to have em cut it for me.

Below the metal top, there is a plastic cover. If you are cutting the top, the side looks dumb.

Look at my picture again, see how you can see the waterpump and tensioner?

gotcha.
I was thinking of cutting it in more of a:

__
.----' |
'-------'

kinda way, where yours is:

__

so I didn't even think about that plastic.

eh, you've got a point. We did two showcars while I worked at cartoyz and both had come straight from engine shops where they had done it like I described. It looked pretty nice. I wasn't planning for timing at the moment, I was strictly doing it for looks. Now that you mention it, though, I may hack it off completely since I do plan to eventually get to that point.

Hell, hacking it off completely will make it easier for me anyway.

annoying but liveable. at low speeds it's a bitch but brians right. Anything over 10-15mph feels fine.

Brian, why not just relocate your PS system to the bottom where the AC compressor was? Thats what I did. All I did was remove the ps loop and run the PS lines down to the inside of the side mount. Also you'll have to tap the top of the ps pump inlet which is not a big deal because its already prepped for it. VEry easy fix and you get PS back.

Beacuse I simply did not want the extra weight and Drag.

If I wanted my PS, I would have just left it where it was.

extra weight? all that hardware coudln't have been more than 10lbs. Drag? come on man. You probably saved 1hp without the ps pump. You probably lost more power by putting those big wheels on the car than you would from the PS pump.

personally I can't wait for my new stuff to come in so I can put the PS back in the car. It's driveable but it's not enjoyable anymore.

True about the Rims, it was a trade between a rim that could survive a bump and a light rim that would shatter on contact with anything. They are no heavier than the stock ones were so I didn't really care. I really don't miss the P/S. The Porsche and the MP5 do not have P/S and I have no plans to bother at all. I have not had it for over a year in the Mazda and I acually hate driving my wife's Mazda 3 cause there is hardly any feedback.

I cut the plastic cover just below the gears to follow the shape of the gears and I cut the side of the valve cover completely out with just enough holding the cam sensor in place. I can't find a current picture so I'll have to take one later.
