View Full Version : MPNick's T28 "Upgrade"

A few of the dallas people have MPNick's turbo upgrade and love it. However, the idea of shipping my car parts somewhere to get work done that could be done locally kinda bugs me. I'm somewhat close to "Majestic Turbo" in Waco so it could be done there.
Question is, from my understanding, all he does is port the stock turbo, add in the GT28 turbine/compressor and match the porting in the exhaust. Is that all that's really done, though?

Yes that is all he does. Most of the arguements on the other board are based on a different GT25R that has been worked, so don't be confused by some of the claims over there.
If the turbo is in good working order, I suggest selling it and going with a new, bigger turbo... the price difference would be minimal.

eh, $ is the key factor. I had to take out a loan from the credit union in order to get this done, and all I asked for stupidly was 2k. I've spent $500 already on an AEM wideband, intake(sold mine previously), pillar and other various "fix it" pieces.

i would honestly not send your parts to nick for machine work. i have heard quite a few horror stories since just before christmas about the quality outcome.

Is a GT28 compressor/turbine the largest size to fit in that housing?

Well, if you send it to Nick, factor in shipping costs, and the (I believe 550) for the re-work, and you are at 600+. Sell your stock turbo for 350ish, and you are right in the ballpark of a brand new 28RS for 950-995 depending on where you get it.

$. I have yet to pull the turbo to check for play, which is the way to test from what I've read. So this is kinda preliminary worrying until I do that.

i'd have to agree. My aux. injector bracket he made was the biggest hack job of welding i've ever seen. I could do better blindfolded.

simply take off the air intake and grab the stud/nut on the compressor and toggle it left, right and up or whatever. if its hitting the housing its done and if theres some "play", well rebuilding or a new one should be something to keep in mind.

Normally it should be rater Imobile. However a minor amount of play in and out on a used turbo should be fine I guess.
As long as it does not move up and down. It will eventually get worse with time and fail. It's the nature of carparts.

I think they say as much as 10 or 15 thousandths play is acceptable.. play is typically measured as the axial movement (same direction as the shaft is long). But you do need to check radial as well to ensure the turbine won't "crash". You can check axial with a machinist dial by putting it on the end... then pulling the other end all the way, use that as your 'zero' point and then push it back toward the indicator and see how much it moved... when I sold my last turbo I measured 6 thousandths of play... and that is "great" for a 16G. there is some variation also between ball bearing turbos versus journal bearing turbos.

I am considering selling mine travis, and it was back when Nick did zero welding at all on it... looks perfect. Only thing is you would kind of be limited to running a HKS SSQV, because it is so close to the injectors.

I am planning on switching to a new EMS, and if I stick to the MPI then I am going to run 4 aux injectors in the intake manny... so either way I won't need this setup here in the coming months.

Ken the deal looks pretty solid at this point, but if you ever need any welding done let me know. He wasn't the best about time on large quantity shit like Dex's brackets, but he does amazing work and single projects are done super quick. I could easily remake what I did there for anyone if I were given the components.
It's obvious in the pics that the welds are top notch, but the pics still don't do it justice... absolutely stunning piece when you see it in person. Part of me will be sad to see it go.

I love my MPNick-upgrade and I would have to think Moeed is quite happy with his. Don't know all the spec's etc., but I like the way it feels and have had a lot of fun with it!!!
