View Full Version : Ok, do huge carbon plenum intakes even do anything?

I see these all the time (seems to only work on Hondas :P) and always wonder if they actually gain you anything more than a reg intake or if they are just made to look pretty. Does the "charge plenum" actually work? And if it does, why is there not one for the P5?! lol

I'd assume it would keep intake temps cooler. less heat transfer

It'd be cool to try an finagle one of those into my engine bay. But only if I didnt have to pay for it. lol

Any place for a MAF or temp sensor? It really don't even look all that good anyways.

No.
JC-MP5
06-07-2008, 10:57 PM
No as in they dont work? Or no as in ghey for the protege? I think it would be cool to have a carbon intake. Not necisarrily a plenum, but carbon pipe cai?

They don't offer any performance. Years ago a company made a carbon fiber intake for the Protege. Haven't seen one(used) for sale in over a year though.

I think a carbon intake for our cars woudl be cool.
Like a carbon intake box to a cone filter and regular hard pipe.

The company that makes one for the Protege is Autoexe. It costs over $500 when all is said and done to get it here.

Those who use it, including TheMan swear that it works well...

someone should use carbon pipes for an intercooler setup, biggest I've seen is 2" ID though.

What is the average diameter of a CAI pipe?
I actually found carbon fibre pipe!
http://www.carbonfibertubeshop.com/large%20tubing.html
Expensive tho. It'd just be easier to get a regualr CAI.

Oh it would. But you cant put bends in it. You'd have to use so many curved connectors. It's not worth the $$$.

MUCH lower intake temps than pretty much any 'metal' intake. You can put your hand on a CF intake usually and it'll be cool. Any kind of metal intake will be HOT

I would still cost mad $$$. I think 60 inches of 2 inch pipe was like 260+ bux.
kansei
06-08-2008, 11:30 PM
60 inches would be an epic intake. You could have the filter back by the gas tank lol
JC-MP5
06-08-2008, 11:33 PM
Im' sure I could ask for less pipe....
I still need intake pipe diameter. About 2 inches?
jeg0024
06-08-2008, 11:33 PM
about 3 3/4 to 4 no?
kansei
06-08-2008, 11:34 PM
I could get you an OD on mine.. in the AM though, not right now. my intake right now is just the injen piece that goes between the throttle body and the MAF on naturally aspirated proteges so it should be a good size.
JC-MP5
06-08-2008, 11:38 PM
Just lemme know. Cuz if its more than 2 I think I'm out of luck with this one site. They make up to 2 inch pipe. 2.2 at most I think.
kansei
06-08-2008, 11:53 PM
pretty sure it is.. like 2.5"
mgerth
06-09-2008, 12:44 AM
Its larger than 2"
505zoom
06-09-2008, 01:59 AM
2.75" MAF, 2.5" TB.
A 2" pipe would suck (not in a good way) as an intake. :)

Damn, the search continues. Maybe 2 inch pipe for a thru-the-headlight ram?

JC-MP5
06-09-2008, 09:20 PM
I dont know. It hints toward straight peices only. Cuz its for water and wiring etc... not car intakes lol. I'll have to call and ask. I hate calling and asking. lol
Protege v2.5

If you call make sure you find out what its max temperature is for the pipes. Seeing as they aren't automotive specific the resin could melt with under hood temp.
Nevermind just went to the site:smashfreakB:
JC-MP5
06-09-2008, 10:03 PM
Since they make automotive bits I'm sure it wouldnt be a horrible stretch to make an intake. Or some curved pipe.

kansei

Well the piping isn't necessarily an automotive piece. Gemini makes things like CF hoods and other "luxury items" and that's probably what they meant by that.
