They didn't just force you to take the tint off? nice. they will if they catch you a few times. How much darker is it than stock? It looks so nice in the pic
Rosshole

It would cost $50 to get the tint removed, then I wouldn't owe the fine. But if you don't get it taken care of, then you have to pay the ticket.
It was already tinted when I got it, but the cops light transmission meter said 27%
I hade 15% on my P5 and never even got asked about it all of the times that I got pulled over for breaking the law. With the 6, I got pulled over at 10:30 on a saturday morning driving 5 mph UNDER the limit with my seatbelt on. I don't understand police sometimes.

If you were a real man you'd get the garage all the time. :)
or just enlarge it to fit as many cars as needed.
garage > house (can you tell I'm young, not married, etc)? lol

build her a tent for her car or something. A man needs his garage!

^ two car garage is for one car! that other car space is used for work area and tool storage! do i have to teach you this? lol

The reinforced poly rear diff mount? (I forget which rear diff mount is is, I believe there's two of them?)
I've heard great things about the poly diff mount :)
chiefmg
02-14-2008, 08:25 PM
Let me see if I can explain it without confusing anyone. There are two mounts for the rear diff, Turbine Tech makes a completely new front mount and can provide poly bushings for the rear mount. I have that setup coming. Looks like a big job, you have to remove the exhaust and dirveshaft, then drop the diff down so you can reach the bolts on top of it. Once the rear mount is out you have to remove the stock rubber bushing by cutting it out, then put in the poly.
I think of it as cheap insurance. I have checked my mount bolts a couple of times and haven't had any problems, but having just one bolt back out and result in the destruction of the diff would ruin my month. It also helped that with the GB we got a killer deal.

I'm pretty stoked about it, unfortunately right now I won't be getting home for an extra 2-3 weeks. Plus there is a chance I will be getting a new job that will require my going right out for another 3 months. If that happens I am looking at mid-summer to get everything on the car and actually driving it. Only good thing is that if that happens I am going to also get one of the dual cat-back systems to reward myself.

Bought a MSD Dashhawk from Ken at Protege Garage last night (what I get for staying up past my bedtime surfing the Web). Good price and I have read nothing but good things about it. Probably still go ahead and install my boost gauge once I get the pod for it, I suspect it will be easier to look at that than try to read the Dashhawk (at least with my eyes).
I expect to hear any day from the gf about my growing stockpile of parts (I told her yet again I wouldn't be doing that, turns out I was wrong). At least she isn't putting them in the corner of the bedroom this time!

How do you install them? I can't seem to find any help with that. Do they just pop out or do i have to pull my bumper?
chiefmg

Easiest way is to remove the fasteners holding the inner fender liners at the front of the wheel opening (3-4 plastic screws), then pull the liners back and stick your hand up inside the front bumper. Look at your new lights to see how they are configured and then push the tab to release the assembly. Once you have it out you can remove the light bulb socket, reverse the order and then install the new ones.

I love my Forge. The sound is different, my gf doesn't care for it but I like it (kind of a metallic ping). Just be careful when putting it in, the O-ring moved on me and it got pinched (discovered it when I took it off). Next time I put it on I'm going to use some Aviation Form-a-Gasket to hold the O-ring in place. Also, I have heard of some people breaking the bolts that hold it on, but I suspect it is because they tried to overtighten them.

I saw the write-up you posted over on 247, while that is an easy way to do it there is the chance of marring the bumper cover. I have also read of people breaking the tabs on the lights off. I prefer to use the method I told you about, to each of us his (or her) own.
Oh, and glad you like the corners. I like my clears much better than the factory amber ones, looks a lot better on my BCM.

With the rag around the screwdriver, I had no marring issues whatsoever. Not saying the village idiot couldn't fuck their bumper up, but if you know what you're doing and realize the risks involved, you tend to avoid the chance of damaging it. Its all common sense IMO.

Unfortuantely common sense isn't so common. We need to rename it to better reflect the norm today.
As for village idiots, I offer up the number of people who installed a different front grille on their MS6 without using any double-sided tape to hold the bottom, only to have it tear itself off on the highway. These same people then complained that it was a poor design. Why do you think Mazda put four tabs on the bottom of the stock one?
Let us know how you like your Forge.

True, I couldn't agree more. As for the grille issues, effort in = effort out. If you don't follow directions fully, you find things don't work right.
I'm going to add in what you told me about the inner fender as an alternative solution. That way its a little more complete.
I think I'll have the Forge by Sat. at the latest, so I'll post install pics after.

Well, I did it again. While waiting for my BPV, I decided to order myself the TWM shifter w/ bushings from PG. The modding bug bit me and I had to do something to keep myself occupied over spring break.
chiefmg
03-07-2008, 08:38 PM
That is an awesome mod. I bought mine in the initial offering from TWM. Couple of things to watch for on the install (I think they have it covered in their instructions now). There are something like 3 different configurations on the stock shifter, depending upon which one you have you may have to drill out a hole, or remove an L shaped bracket. Not a big deal. The other thing is be extra careful while removing the small pin from the factory shifter (you have to reuse it). Be careful again while installing it in the TWM. I read where at least one person broke the pin and apparently Mazda only sells it with the whole shifter assembly for some exorbitant sum.
I did mine in place, but if I were to do it over again I would just remove the whole shift assembly from the car. You are already most of the way there, and it will give you easy access to everything.

I appreciate the heads-up. I did the Kartboy on my Protege, and that was a real pain, mainly because of that damn snap rind (I did have the correct pliers too). After d/ling and looking at the instructions a few times, I don't think it will be too bad. I saw the part about saving the pin, as well as drilling out the hole. I don't think the instructions mentioned about the different configurations though. I know my MS6 was one of the last produced, if that makes a difference. I figure I'll have the shifter by the middle of next week.

I am a merchant seaman (more specifically, a marine engineer). The ship I am currently working on has a schedule of 4 months on, 4 months off. The 4 months vacation is awesome, but you have to deal with the 4 months away. Normally it isn't a big deal, but we have been Stateside since before Christmas doing a shipyard period and are now stuck in a layberth. I am past due off, my relief had some minor medical stuff so I agreed to stay over a few weeks. However, I am looking at moving to a new job which might mean little to no time home, so I am getting antsy.

In the tender hands of my gf. I just heard from a local forum I am on that she is tearing up the roadways in my absence (you gotta love the Internet!). Conveniently, my Protege has suffered a slow leak in one of the tires, and since she doesn't want to be stranded has decided to drive the Speed exclusively. Her excuse is that she doesn't want to get the leak fixed and have me bitch about how she went about it. While there is some basis for this, mainly she doesn't want to give up the seat heaters in the Speed. I am on to her!!
Oh, and you gotta love a woman who drives the piss out of a performance car. I know I do.
That's crazy...

Trust me, if my hoped for job doesn't materialize, I will be bringing the Speed back here with me in July. Or maybe one of my bikes. This ship has a stern ramp (we carry vehicles, unfortunately I can't get it on from where we are), so if things were different I could drive it on board. While it may seem that would be a neat thing (like racing around the decks) with all the tie-down supports that stick up I would blow out a tire.

Okay, crusing around the forums today and I am now drooling over the upcoming ability to reflash the stock ECU. As well as dreaming of other stuff I need lots of money for. In the course of my travels I was looking at the exhaust hangers Corksport offers on their site for the normal 6. Two questions for anyone who might know, will these work on the Speed 6 (I presume they will), and how do they compare to the now-discontinued Kartboy hangers?

Ok, is the flash gonna be a dealer thing?
I didn't know kartboy made exhaust hangers for the 6.
well.. the good, the bad, and ... everything in the middle.
The good: Got Koni Sport yellows installed along with RPM sport springs. Rear dropped right away, but front is taking its sweet @ss time. The ride quality did not change at all, but cornering has improved significantly. Will have a full review after the first track/autoX day.
The bad: nothing else was installed. Mechanic: "We should wait until the suspension settles before we go ahead with ball joints and full alignment." Which is understandable, but DAMN, he could at least put the engine mount on. grrrr. That kind of pissed me off.
Other: for as much as I am spending on suspension + install, I could probably get a full coilover kit and put it on myself... yea, wtf. :|
on topic: what difference do the aftermarket hangers make?
why such a hype about dealer flash? It won't give you more than 15 peak psi of boost anyway :P

Sorry I can't link with this slow-ass system I'm on, if you go to mazda6club and look for the ECU reflash thread under the Speed6 subforum you'll see what I am talking about. Performance Racing is going to be offering this service, it won't be through a dealer. Reflashing a stock MS6 is supposed to net a 37 hp increase. Future stages will support upgrades.
As for the exhaust hangers, I have a set of Kartboys on my Pro. If you upgrade your system it is usually heavier, the urethane hangers provide more support and keep things from banging around. I thought Kartboy used to offer them for the 6 but I might be mistaken.

I'll look it up for the reflash. Interesting that theyve got one in the works.
I also had the Karboy hangers on my Pro, which really stopped the flopping around. My understanding was that the aftermarket exhausts (I had the CS) were lighter than stock and therefore wobbled around more. I'll crawl under my car this weekend and see what we've got down there.

After reading about it more I can't justify $1000 on a reflash when I can do the XEDE and have more control over the car for the same price. It all depends on the amount of user interaction you want. Reflashers are nice, but they are quite simple for a user. There's a pretty good tuning shop about 40 minutes from where I live, so I think I'm going to talk to them and see what they're capable of.

he doesn't but our doors have big ridges in them where they would be, so if the magnet extends down that far and isn't a strong magnet it'll move or possibly fall off on the course. I think my original magnets were 12" high and they has this problem.

Thats one thing I've still yet to cope with compared to my Pro. Couple that with the fact that this has TC/DSC and the Pros don't and it sometimes makes you feel disconnected driving it. I'm going on a fun drive next weekend, so that will be the real test for me to see how it fares.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. I received that front lip today. It ALMOST mates up, unfortunately it is about two inches too short on either side. Curvature is good though. I am going to see if I can find someone who works with ABS plastic, figure it can be cut in the middle and an insert put in. Since it will be painted it won't be noticeable. It does look sweet though.

Okay, why do I get the feeling I am monopolizing this thread?
Just ordered the Whiteline adjustable rear sway bar. Since I have the rear diff mount to put in (and a little extra cash) I figured I'd bite the bullet and go ahead. From what I hear it will take my handling that last little bit (in conjunction with my RPM springs).

I ordered the PIAA LEDs for the driving lights. I think my dad managed to get an intake for my birthday (the 22nd) so I want to have the lights to swap while I'm under the hood and the airbox will be out.
I also think I'm gonna order the all weather floor mats, and the red anodized oil cap from the dealer.
A Defi gauge has been in the works, but I'm gonna wait till I'm done with school for the semester so I can save up some more cash for my trip this summer (EECMM for a week in Myrtle Beach)

Yeah I agree. It does spice it up a bit.
I'm a little concerned though, on my drive home, while idling at a light, I heard a random noise coming from the engine, like something was bouncing around, then it stopped after 5 sec. or so. It did it twice. I'm gonna continue to monitor it.

There are a couple of TSBs on the valvetrain, check over on Mazda6club for threads in the Mazdaspeed6 general subforum. One is for replacement of the actuating pin on the VVT (this is a noise you would hear at start-up), the other is for insufficient oil pressure to the cams. For that one it sounds like they are shimming the pump relief valve to increase pressure.

Thanks Mike. I drove it to work this morning and paid extra attention, and noticed a similar sound coming from my rear deck. I think that's the culprit. I have a lengthy drive to school tonight so I plan on really monitoring it, and possibly taking it in tomorrow if I notice anything abnormal.

Update on the noise:
After about 70 miles today and various stops along the way, I can't seem to find that noise anymore, except from the rear deck. I'll look into it more on the weekend, after I clean everything out.
In other news, my driving light LEDs are en route, and my dad dropped my b-day present a little early: MS intake, MS oil cap, cargo net, and all weather floor mats are on their way as well!
Now I'm debating between tint and my boost gauge/defi-link/test pipe instead...

Oh, there was something on Mazda6club in the audio section about noise from the back deck. There is a picture there of where to put in foam to cushion the package shelf to keep it from vibrating. IIRC it was in the thread about a pre-amp for the Bose sub.

Yes, it is. Engineering is working on the root cause and correction. I don’t expect resolution for another couple of weeks
So, I would imagine I will probably get one of the first 'revised' ones after they get done with them. I'll let everyone know.

GT. AFAIK none of the fobs have a trunk button on them, I am talking about the little button located to the left of the trunk release (same as on the front doors). 04-19-2008, 02:17 PM
Well, I'm a little over halfway with my jobs for today. Stainless clutch and brake lines are in, haven't bled yet. I have both rear diff mounts out, just getting ready to cut out the stock bushings from the rear to put in the urethane. This isn't a horrible job but some of the fasteners are a true PITA. I also highly recommend putting in a rear sway at the same time (if you want one) as it will actually be easy with everything you have apart.
chiefmg
04-20-2008, 12:23 AM
So, it took me until 2330 to finish for the day (that includes having everything put away). Putting it all back together went okay except for a couple of hiccups (like, forgetting to reinstall the heat shield before I connected the driveshaft). The biggest one was not quite having the rear sway in position before I connected up the rear diff mount. So out came the bolts and I did a balancing act, then put it back together. Still have to bleed the brakes and clutch, will get that tomorrow. Also have to buy a couple of 3/8" universals in order to properly torque the frame bolt for the forward diff mount.
chiefmg
04-20-2008, 12:32 PM
Everything is done, although I am not happy with the upper mount bolt on the front diff mount. Couldn't really get to the torque it needed (doesn't help you have to use two u-joints to get in there). I'm going to go get a six point socket to fit it once my aches subside a little. Brakes were the easiest I have ever bled after changing to stainless lines, might have helped that I filled the reservoir last night so possibly the fluid displaced some air. The pedal is rock hard now, going for a drive in a bit to see how they function. Also to check out the rear sway...
chiefmg
04-20-2008, 09:18 PM
Okay, here's a report on things. Brake lines give better feel and more power, although once the car was started and the booster was in effect the hard pedal went away. Plus side to the clutch line, it is easier to actuate, almost seems like a normal car. As for the rear sway, it was drizzling so I couldn't push it (plus traffic sucked), but the car corners noticeably flatter and it feels much lighter in the front. As a comparison when I installed the adjustable front ball joints and had it aligned, it felt like the car lost 300 pounds. This gives a similar feel.
The Turbine Tech rear diff mounts are fairly transparent. I do notice more noise from the rear end (gear whine), but it isn't objectionable. The car does seem to hook up better, although that could just be the placebo effect.
interesting ...
which sway bar did you get? (sorry if I missed it)
chiefmg
04-20-2008, 10:46 PM
Whiteline adjustable. Stock endlinks. I put it on the stiffest setting (of two), I was afraid it might make the car tail-happy but does not seem to have (not sure how the gf would handle that). The stories are true, it IS a total PITA to install although it is much easier to put in when you do the rear diff mount.
I'm planning on putting both of those on at the same time ...
chiefmg
04-21-2008, 12:05 AM
Make sure you have a picture in your mind of how it all went together, or take actual pictures. Part of my problem was it took so long that when I was putting it back together I was stumped on a couple of items (sway bar being one) as to just how it all went together. Result was I didn't quite have it in the correct position and had to drop the diff again.
When you get to replacing the bushings in the rear mount, it helps to have a sharp razor knife. I also used a propane torch to burn out the rubber once I had the big chunks cut out. Smells like hell, but it works pretty good. Burn then scrape. Another tip (thanks to my son who was helping me), the rear bushings are directional. The instructions say they go in easily if properly lubed, what they don't tell you is one side is slightly smaller than the other. I measured it out at 2mm less diameter. The side of the urethane bushing with the number on it is the smaller so put that in first. I don't have a vise handy, so I used two pieces of 2X4 and muscled them in, worked pretty well.

The grille was terrible, the defects I was told would be fixed weren't and the guy who got them for me said the painter told him it would cost more to have it fixed. I'm pissed, why wasn't I called and asked before they painted it? I told him no, I'd take it somewhere else.
Thought about it overnight and took it (and one of the taillight surrounds which had a run in it) back to the place. I talked to the manager who originally gave me the quote, the look on his face when he saw the grille was priceless. He apologized and said he hadn't communicated with the painter properly, and that he would take care of it for no additional charge. I'll reserve judgment until I get it all back and see how it looks, but that is the kind of customer service I like to experience.

Installed my Rotora ceramic brake pads in the front and bedded them in. Have to wait for the kids to get home from school to bleed the fronts, the pedal is slightly spongy. Other than that, the brakes are excellent now. Just have to make sure I don't stop too quickly or I will collect someone up my ass (since people seem to like to tailgate this car).

My front drivers side window had a hissing noise at freeway speeds. They had to replace the weatherstripping and its fixed. The CDFP TSB made a big difference in my car, no more shuddering when getting on it. It looks as if the techs put about 30 miles of 'road testing' on it and pissed away some of my gas...not too thrilled with that.
hmm ... so there is a TSB on a fuel pump?! damn... I have some crappy performance once in awhile, that I think is fuel delivery oriented... did they tell you what was wrong exactly?
chiefmg
05-14-2008, 07:58 AM
The fuel pump TSB is tied to a couple of intermittent CEL codes, if you get them then they can do the TSB. The pump itself is no different from what I understand, a change is made to the bypass solenoid (think that is what it's called) that permits higher pressures.
hmm ... interesting.
I'm replacing my fuel pump pretty soon ... hopefully it won't effect anything (in a bad way that is).

There were 3 conditions tied to the fuel pump TSB, and there are several solutions, up to replacing the pump and reflashing the PCM with the newest software. Depending on your build date and symptoms, they decide how severe to go about it.
I don't have all the details here at work, but I need to go back on Sat. to get the floor mat hook installed, so I will have the paperwork with me. Mine was shuddering under acceleration, especially after driving for more than 15 min. It just felt like intermittent turbo lag. All gone now.

Yeah, I can tell its gone now. Swapped the BPVs yesterday and shes running like a champ!
Here's the TSB:
well. CPe CDFP is in. There were a couple of PITAs during the install, but overall it went pretty smooth.
Then I did my coolant mix... that didn't go so well. The plastic drain plug is a f*ckin POS. Draining ALL the coolant is impossible... Flushing all the internals takes up a lot of time and effort.
End result - I have about 55% water 45% coolant mix in my car right now, which is not quite what I wanted, but it's acceptable. When's the next time I'm going to do this?! Not any time soon. F*ck this sh*t!!!!!

Do you have satellite? I need to invest in the iPod setup...I miss my old Alpine HU that had it. I'm still rocking CDs and Sirius.
Yesterday I gave my car the good once over and cleaned her up. Swapped the floor mats back to the cloth ones, since the weather is good again. If it gets crummy, I keep them in the trunk just in case.
no. I don't have serius... This adapter actually goes into the satellite connector, so you can't have both :/

They make a switching box available through the dealer, which allows you to have both. It's around $150 I believe. I thought (not 100% sure) that one of the aftermarket kits plugs in somewhere else and doesn't effect that. I hate to spend $400 to listen to my iPod.
I'm pretty sure there is a different one, but I went the easy way, since I don't have satellite anyway.

Yeah, I've been looking for a kit, either the NEO, Axxess, or Audiolink. Seems like no matter which I choose, I've gotta get the switching box from Mazda. I can get it at wholesale, but it's another unnecessary expense IMO.

Haven't done anything to it today (not even drive, let the gf have her). Just wanted to bump this up a bit.
I did go over to 247 a couple of times to visit the 6 section. Every time I do I can't decide who is the bigger moron. I mean, people ask questions that are answered in their owner's manual. There are others who talk about their badgeless grille flying off and how they weren't given instructions on how to mount it. HELLO MCFLY!! If the factory one has four clips on the bottom to hold it in, then why wouldn't the other one require something as well? One guy had been in touch with the person who made it and they told him to use 3M tape on it. Can't recall if he did or if he decided that wouldn't be enough to hold it.

There are some real mental giants over there, and I hate to admit that. Common sense isn't so common.
I drove mine last night through the chaos that was the streets downtown when the Wings won the Stanley Cup, and last week I managed to scrape the lower portion of the front bumper on some shitty construction crossing a road I didn't expect, but other than that she's running good. Still debating about what to do next with it, either HID upgrade for lows/fogs or a test pipe.

A few of us from c6c went to watkins glen for the race this weekend and on our way out on friday night, i think i killed every buy between here and there. my windshield was so covered, i really couldn't see at all. i wish i would have thought to take a pic of it. that took some serious scrubbing to get off, but i managed to kills some mutantly large ones on the way home!!

it would be ok if mazda if treated their loyal customers better but they just dont. I've bought every new mazda (except the mx5 and 5) since 2002 and still get hosed. You'd think they'd treat me a little better.
besides the trade=in value on them is HORRIBLE. My $31k speed6 with 18k miles traded-in for $15.5k. Way to hold your value there.

block8head on Mazda6 Club is making them in two sizes. This is the one that replaces the driver's side defrost vent. It looks factory, and with the right type of gauge it blends right in.
I'm think about puttin me plx gauge in there ... I think it'll blend in quite nicely. And it's low-profile.

He had to increase the price on the 52mm to $70 shipped. I guess he still has some supplies for the 60mm because they are $60 shipped. Either way, it's cheap and a great product. You can find the thread in the MS6 section in the opening subforum, it's about 14 pages long.

So my bent rim, was in all actaully a bent wheel. IE totally hosed. The company did find a refurbed one for me for $220 or so. I'll find out monday. im not super pleased, but my other options were spending at least $500. Shrug.
When I get the wheel in I'll take it over to stweart and get the winters mounted and then the CAI will come off for winter.
In other words, the Speed6 goes from race car to swamp buggy. Over the winter I''l be ordering rotors, pades, possibly a BOV and if I get a super awesome job, possibly coilovers. Annnd I'll probably need new tires, thinking some Yokohamas.

You guys and your pictures! Don't worry, I'll post them both up (although the pre-am is just a small PC board that will be mounted inside the small plastic case).
Fez, if you have the money I would say get one of the pods now. No telling how long he will keep making them (labor intensive which I imagine is why the other guy stopped...with my money!). If you end up not using it you will be able to sell it, as it works on regular 6s too.

I would e-mail him first to make sure he still has some on hand. The cost of this unit is $70 shipped, but as you can see he uses top quality components.
I just installed mine this morning, the change is amazing. Overall sound quality has improved now that I am not using the bass setting on the head unit to give me bottom end. The highs are crisper and there is a nice kick to the bass. I'll post some pics later.

oooO this is a pre-amp. ha. My guy did it so you can connect it right where the sub is at; it fits in that plastic black box that pops out from under the sub.
This does look like HQ stuff though, he puts a lot of time into these.

Well, if you just mounted the PC board it would probably fit under the plastic. I opted to do it like someone else did, think it looks good and it is protected.
