It all depends on what you're after...
Do you want a substantial gain or mostly, better looks/sound?
You want much improved performance? Get a cat-back or have one custom made.
You want little or no gains with a nice or simply annoying exhaust note, get a manufactured axle-back or have one custom welded to your OEM pipe.
An after-market exhaust...cat-back or axle-back will generally give you a gain. How much of a gain depends on the system. Axle-backs will not net you nearly as much of a gain as a cat-back.
The free'r flowing the exhaust, the larger the gains...up to a point. In my previous car (a Neon), I used a custom built exhaust. It was 2.5" from the header-back. Yeah, header-back. Every exhaust shop I talked to told me that 2.5" was too large and that I was going to lose more than I gained. BS.
I lost some torque at the bottom end but gained an amazing amount of power at the top end. Way better than the recommended 2.25".
Even in my latest car, (P5) I started with a 2.25" wrinkle-bend axle-back and noticed a good gain at top end (high rpm's) but massive drone at cruising speed (100-120 KPH).
I then went to the Magnaflow...2.25" with Mandrel-bent tubing and I noticed as good gain at the top end with a lot less drone. Although I think that just like the Neon, I would notice even better gains out of a 2.5" system.
So, like I said at the begining, it all depends on what you want...I'd save my money and spend on a nice cat-back that is not too loud...that way I get the best of both worlds...
If you want such a system, most people recommend the Racing-Beat system. Pricy but apparently WELL worth it. I recommend the Magnaflow...not as pricey and still great gains ad nice sound. I bought mine for under $400 CDN.
You will get the best (legal) gains out of a header/cat-back system combined with a high or free-flowing catalytic converter.
Hope this helped...although I think it may make your decision more difficult than before...
