SOrry I am really new at this moding business. What is the most basic mod or the first mod i should do on my completely stock protege? I don't want nehting crazy like supercharging, just something easy i can do myself. any suggestions??

You could lower it and get some new rims and tires... Not so cheap but makes it look good.
First thing i did was window tinting and painting some exterior parts to match the car colour.
Any pics?

New wheels and tires are a big mod, it will change the handling for the better. I would start with that.

another basic mods to do first: high flow intake, a new catback also upgrading your brake system with better disk and pads should work for you

Intake and exhaust is what most people work on first. The intake is easy to install so that's something you can do yourself. For the exhaust you would need to go to a shop to install it unless you know how to weld. If you aren't afraid of taking on a small project you could install new brake rotors and pads. It's not as hard as most people think. After that you could do some springs. It's a bit harder than brakes but not by much. First time it took me 4 hours just because I was taking my time. Now I can do it in about 1.5 hrs.

1, air intake (sponge filter etc. if A/T shift, don't make a cone shape filter)
2, spark cable and plugs
3, grounding wire (earth wiring)
4, front strut bar
5, muffler
* The tornado fuel saver, I really don't know it can be save more fuel or not. but in 2000- 3500 rpm, it is gain, going fast (it is real). Fans of USA/ CA said, it is nothing result after install. But fans of japan said it almost gain lower rpm.

I you have the 1.8L or 2.0L you could use one of these:
http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/index ... 1_21_31_45 (http://mazda3online.web.aplus.net/index.php?cPath=281_21_31_45)
Then it's just a matter of removing your OEM intake piping and airbox and replacing it with this one.
These aren't the only ones out there by far but thought I'd give you an idea.

Grounding wires stabilise the current from the battery through earth points. Just helps the car run smoother due to all the electrics having a good earth.

Just get rims and lower it.
Thats the most basic mod imo.
