Here's a brief guide on the specs of the different OEM wheels offered on 3rd gen Proteges. Hopefully someone finds this useful.

Perhaps showing the 02 wheels from the P5 also. Just a thought?

the 03.5 are lighter then 03? That seems really odd...different material?
oh, and the MP3 is a 205 tire ;)
Otherwise, cool little thread :)

I never got a chance to weigh either one myself, but that's what information I gathered from the other forums. It turns out that they really are lighter, dunno how or why.
Thanks for the MP3 correction. I had 205 written down on my document, just didn't copy it right.

Tire size on the mp3 is 205/45 not 215/40
tire size on the MSP is 215/45 not 215/40
and yeah what's up with the different weights? They're the same wheel. One is painted vs the other having more of a dark polished look to them
you guys all beat me.. I left the thread open in another tab for too long

Paint weighs -4lbs.

Paint weighs -4lbs.
apparently. I know the paint on my CF hood made it noticeably heavier .. it took a lot of primer to be able to completely get rid of that awful look most painted CF has where it just isn't perfectly smooth

Jesus, I really messed up those tire specs. Thanks for the corrections everyone.
As for the weight differences, I don't have an explanation. I just know that when I did my searching around those were the results I came up with. I tried to make sure I came across at least three or more samples where people reported the same weights, so I stuck with those figures. Maybe I should search around a bit more to try and confirm those results, cuz it doesn't make sense to me either.

If the stock offset on the P5 is 40mm and the offset on the MSP wheels is 55mm, are ppl having rubbing issues when they put the Racing Hearts on the P5?
I tried putting the Mazda6 wheels with a 50mm offset on my P5 and I couldnt even bolt it in on the back cause the inside of the tire would hit the strut.
Although I was using 225/45s on those rims, and the MSP uses 215s.
Any ideas?

Not sure if you mis-typed but the stock offset for a P5 is 50mm and the stock offset of the Mazda6 17" wheels is 60mm. The tire size is your problem. I would say go with a 205/40, maybe a 215/40 with spacers?

the Mazda6 wheels offset is ~60, not 50.
Also 225s will never fit unless you roll your fenders and/or have the offset dead on.
I'm pretty sure even with 215/40 you would need to run spacers with the Mazda6 wheels.
edit: damn this forum moves to fast I can't keep threads open for 20+ minutes in other tabs like I'm used to elsewhere :headbang:

I have no trouble with rubbing when riding on the MSP wheels. I just took them off for winter.

I have my MS3 18's, I think offset is 45mm running 215/35 on Eibach Pro-kit well more than enough space on the back... no rubbing at all
On that note... I still have them on, not bad in the snow at all... but I have to take them out this weekend... to busy
Note to self "HAVE TO TAKE THEM OUT !!!"

Can we move this thread to the newly established Wheels/Tires section? Perhaps sticky?
I have yet to verify those 03.5 MSP weights but the rest of it should be pretty accurate. Thank you all for the corrections by the way.

not on a P5 you can't. plus they'd be GIGANTIC. 225/40 much more appropriate, though still would throw off the speedo.

Different Wheel Widths.
Offset is Relative to width
If the Wheel is narrower..the offset does not have to be as high to clear...Same goes for the other way.
When you make a wheel wider....You have to incrase the offset to compensate for the increasing width of the rim.
It really has nothing to do with tire sizing at that point.....Once you get the width and offset correct..then tire size will play a factor in what will rub and what wont.
Hope this makes sense and helps you understand.

225/40 is actually a shorter overall tire Vs the 215/45...but its 10mm wider.
The 225/40/17 is 24.08'' Tall while the 215/45/17 is 24.61'' Tall.
The 225/45/17 is 24.97(25") Tall.
This tire would make you read slower than you are actually travelling.
Your speedo would read faster than you are going by a minute amount.

Yes I know how to read tire numbers (not that they actually are accurate at all). Since 215/45-17 is a decent bit taller than the stock Protege5 size, the speedo would be off a decent bit (10x as much as it would be off with a 215/40-17, the closest you can get to stock diameter in a 17").
Not exactly sure where in that post I even said the 225/40 wasn't shorter than 215/45 --I said 225/40 was shorter than 225/45. They're both big for a Protege5.
The MSP stock size is 3 full inches more circumference (on a reference tire) than the P5 size.
215/45-17, 215/40-17, 225/40-17, etc --they're all bigger than stock. Of those, 215/45 is the worst

It wasnt directed at you..It was general Info for the Masses.
And the stock P5 IIRC is a 195/50/16....23.6'' tall.
And yes..actual measured heights varies with manufacturer.
I was actually only posting to help clear up the offest question posed earlier..and I just got into the tire sizing as well.
Geez..sorry.
You would think I just called you an idiot or something with your response.:dunno:

sorry, just clearing up incorrect information. Don't want this place to become the other place. You said 225/40-17 would make the speedo read faster than you're going because it's smaller than a 215/45-17, but the member asking about that has a P5, for which a 215/45-17 is 4% larger than stock.

Thanks for all the info guys, no need to argue over this.
I'll be more specific:
I know how the numbers work on tires, I also know that the larger diameter tires will throw off my speedo.
What I was really interested in knowing was if the tires i have right now (225/45s mounted on Mazda6 rims that dont fit, they hit the strut in the back) will fit with the Racing Harts' offset?
If not I have to buy new tires.
kansei

Really don't think 225s will fit with any offset.. you can always just roll the rear fenders though.. miggght give enough room.
Or you can get spacers for the 6 wheels (instead of the msp wheels, not instead of rolling the fenders).

My Bad.
You are correct...It all depends on hat stock was on the car.
