http://jalopnik.com/assets/resources/2008/05/2011-Ford-F100.jpgThe Ford Ranger's just about ready to kick the bucket, gas prices are higher than the dress neckline of a Texas polygamist cult and CAFE standards — well, let's just say they don't leave much room for error on the high side of the gas guzzle range. Sounds like high time Ford announced a new pickup truck, doesn't it? Perhaps. But only if said pickup truck is the purported return of a badge not seen from Dearborn since 1983 — F-100. That's right, we're hearing rumors this morning of a mini-pickup based on the current F-150. Well, it'll be based on the F-150 in look, feel and most importantly not in size. If it's coming, we're told to expect a Ford F-100 (http://jalopnik.com/tag/2011-Ford-F_100/) at 9/10ths the size of the 2009 Ford F-150 (http://jalopnik.com/tag/2009-Ford-F_150/) to hit dealer lots in the 2011 model year.
Our friends at PickupTrucks.com are also telling us this morning rumors aren't as far-fetched as one would think. Ford desperately is looking for ways to hold on to their share of the ever-shrinking pickup truck market and if they need to offer a stripped down F-150 on Weight Watchers, they'll do it. Heck, they've even got a pretty sketch of what a new boldly-moving-smaller pickup based on the current F-150 might look like. Expect the real version to look nothing like it. But have a look anyway. That's dumb. Provide smaller truck with better mileage.

LAME. 9/10th the size of the monstrous 2009 F150? so so stupid. When the Ranger stops being sold, it'll be the death of the small pickup. Even with the high output 4.0 my B4000 (a ranger) got 21mpg and that was with literally 1 imperial ton of stuff in the bed (plus a cap to contain it all) and the a/c on. There are people that have gotten over 30 with the 4-cyl (2.3) and the 3.0 gets decent mileage as well (4wd models like mine suffer a bit, as they came with 31" tires stock)...

This thing is going to be dodge dakota sized, that's pretty lame.

A guy I work with has a 97 Ranger 4 cylinder 5 speed with 170k miles on it. He gets a solid 32mpg.

10:1 odds the F-100 is just the stylish remake of the Ranger, same size basically. So, more like 8/10ths size.

Good odds. I just think it's a bit retarded to go through all the effort. But that's just me.

Fords retarted. . .

You would think high gas price = more intrest in Ford Ranger but being the knuckle heads they usually are over at ford they think to dump what would be more popular with high price of gas. umm yeah.

kinda weird. I don't remember ever hearing of a F-100. Then ten minutes after reading this thread I hear on some crime show "...Billy Harris has a 1956 F-100 pickup".

Yeah...they were F-100's until late 70's I believe. I guess making it an F150 make it sound bigger?
