View Full Version : How much trouble am I in???

My son is out of the country for a while and put up his prize possession -- his 1999 Miata -- while he is away. He pulled the battery and I've had it on a trickle charger for some time now. I decided to put the battery in tonight and start up the engine as it has been a while since it has been run.
To make a long story short, I managed to accidentally get the battery in backwards and connected the leads backwards - only for a second or so. There obviously were some sparks and I pulled the leads off right away. They actually were never on solidly, but...
Anyway -- you guessed it -- now that I have the battery in correctly there is no sign of life at all. I am hoping that I have only blown some fuses but before I do anything else I figured I would confess all, throw myself on the mercy of the court, and seek advice from the experts!
So how much trouble am I in??? And what do you think I may need to do to fix it???
Thanks in advance for your advice.

I would say to start at the fuse box. check the obvious first. maybe try a different batt. hooked up the right way!!
Oh by the way welcome to the forums!!

It should be a simple fix. Look in the fusebox under the hood. The 80amp fuse most likely blew.
Test the battery.
...and like GOTBOOST said, welcome to the club, DadWhoAlmostGotHimselfInTrouble!

Yup main fuse amp the big one blew. Possibly the audio ones too. It can happen. No worries, fuses are there for just that.

nice user name :). Yeah, put it in the right way and check the fuse box. Replace any blown hardware, and then try again. Worst case (though doubtful), the battery's gone too.

Thanks folks. As you all indicated, it turned out to be only the 80 amp fuse that was blown. Once I figured out how to get it out and replaced, the car started right up! Runs great. Since my son is away I even took the Mrs. out for a run in it (Shhhh - don't tell my son...). Nice car! I gotta get me one of those!
Thanks again!
