but yes.. fixed.

The issue is the reCaptcha human verification system we were using broke but broke in such a way that it allowed registration without said verification.

It's temporarily fixed until the permanent solution comes :)

A secondary issue is that we have a VERY good spam detection system in place that works excellently, but it only checks posts and not private messages :P I'll have to look into implementing that part myself.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention, though I've been investigating and fixing for the past 30 mins or so anyway (got a PM from evolv last night).

The option I'm strongly considering is not allowing sending private messages until a user has X number of posts (probably 5)

I am an admin on a cx-7 forum and that exact user spammed about 15 people in the span of 2 days. Banned, he came back as a different user. IP blocked via vbulletin, no more reports.

he's IP blocked but it's very easy to get around that with anonymous proxies
