Since you had to ask. I'm going to say there's a 95% chance a secondary daily backup was being done to the server at the time, as that's been the issue whenever that happened. Backing up a live server is intensive. Yes it's backed up every night late at night, but it's also regularly backed up by hand and that can only be done when Focus is physically at the server.

I get it around the same time every day, too. Wait a few minutes, it comes back.

Trust me I wish it didn't need to happen too. It is just an extra backup, a big "just in case" thing.

Yup, I'm the guilty one. The server does nightly backups, but twice a month, I back up to a USB external Drive as well. Better safe than sorry. Let me tell you it's 15 minutes of hell, cause it grinds the server down to almost a halt.
Sorry about the slowdown guys, but I hve never lost data, and I do not plan to either...

k I'm just glad it was another backup, not somethin else :P

The nightly backup runs with a special script, if the server load gets too high it pauses the backup job. The USB drive one is just a straight up cp * command :(

I'm glad to have an explanation.. because honestly it was one time to many for me (with no explanation) and I was getting worried on to what my donation was going to ;)
I feel much better now.. keep up the good work everyone!

You guys gotta speaker up long before it becomes "one time too many".. when the server load gets to high, it doesn't stop admins from accessing the site so it's tough for us to notice

We should just turn the server load monitoring in vbulletin off, since the site slows down a bit but not enough to be unaccessible.

I don't understand. Just because there is some money into this forum doesn't mean things can't happen from time to time... 8 minutes? yeah its frustrating, but as its been said, its just the server.
were you seriously on your "last straw" like you make it seem ?
Are you serious about where your donations go? Maybe its a joke and I don't get it, but I feel I do a decent job letting folks know, and those decals, site cards, etc...that money came from somewhere... ;) yeah I still need to get you the color ones.

Right now it's set to 5.. I could just turn it up a bit?
Site was down for like 20 minutes and broken-ish for about an hour after that the other night when I did the 3.7 upgrade and apparently hardly anyone noticed :P
I guess when it happens during the work day it's frustrating for people?

You have to look at it from a members point of view..
to us if we try to access the forum (when 6 people are on) and it says it is to busy that draws a red flag.. or atleast maybe to me.. I just figured if this was done on purpose we would have known.. if it is not done on purpose then maybe we need to upgrade.. I mean I'm not calling anyoen out but with all the donations if this was a server is to small we need an upgrade but cant afford one issue then I would start to judge what is going on..
But obviously thats not it it is a normal routiene that takes place and I fully understand
and yes seriously I have seen this message many times since I joined.. it just seems to occure more latley..

The other options is that I can turn off that facility and the site might just be slow/unresponsive instead, and if something ever happens like some sort of internet famous epic pwnage on here, the site could just be totally inaccessible with no warning message. Basically that facility is there so that if something CRAZY happens, admins can still sneak in and try to fix what they can.
I just turned it up from 5 to 8 so it should be less likely to happen, but I'm pretty sure when the backup happens the server load shoots up a lot higher than 8 even. Focus, any input on that?

This will be the last time I bring up a site problem for sure!

??? I'm sorry that we responded to your concern so quickly? Seriously I'm not sure how to take that comment.
Maybe Focus could let us know the night before he does the backup and I could post an announcement each time? Or he could post an announcement before he does it? not sure how else to handle it really. Backups will be done

Raise it at least to 10. If in the near future, the site/server gets busier, I will just deploy a new server and move the site.

Thanks for the explanation guys and keep up the good work.

Was that really called for...
Honestly like any of us want that to happen..
I dont care how u do it, I dont care if there is a message, I was only curious to why it was happening and if it was a fact that we needed a bigger server or whatever howcome it has not been done..
This is getting blown out of porportion...
lately it seems a few things have done just that.. Been taken way to far!

I raised it to 11. I really think during the backup it hits numbers double that though.

well, i don't think it's a problem but the way it was brought up made me at least a bit defensive... like "all your work blows omg server sucks" is kind of how i read it...
I've done a little work and have a little time into this site... just approach it differently next time, I'm sure if you had a customer come in saying "sg parts suck you gave me the wrong part and its a pos" you would get defensive right off too... if that person comes in calmly, they start off on a much better foot... hopefully at least ?
i dont know, maybe i'm not making sense.

Pat I don't think you're really out of line thinking that, when I saw the first line of the first post I wasn't sure how to take it either. Of course people get defensive when their hard (and volunteer) work is slammed.
But ya, we'll work on a way to better handle the daytime backups so that they don't interfere with the work day. I know work can get boring sometimes and you need a distraction :)

Tylor good save
Pat. It was a bit of irritation on my end, I did not know what this would be causing this I dotn think anyone here (not involved) would have known it was updates) to me it was just a site being over worked and not big enough for the amount of flow it takes in.. this has been a problem with other forums since the interweb began.. how should any of us know this site was gonna be different..
Focus keep up the good work, I aint mad acha!
BTW I will take the blame.. I was out of line... However..... n/m

I know it can cause irritation, and thats the last thing both you and I want... I don't want the site to go down... thats what the donations are for... I'm sure Focus would have let me know if something serious was up and he needed moniez for servarz... :)
I just hope when there is a problem people politely let me know there is a problem and not get all frustrated and get angry... if anyone gets angry about the site being down, maybe we have another issue.
Its very hard coordinating all this, Chris (Kansei), me and Focus spend a lot of time on things and I think the thing that got me frustrated the most was the initial post, even if it was joking... I wake up and see the forum has issues, my stress level goes up, then I see irritated users, stress level up even more... its like a long day at work... I hope people will understand to approach us in a calm collective manner. Things will get done and problems addressed MUCH MORE quickly if everyone is calm. :) Lets make that happen. FEEL FREE to post about problems, but please do so politely.
I hope we're past this now...
Chris probably has the most stress, the poor guy does a LOT of the programming and site work that I either can't or don't understand how. I can do some stuff ;)
Anyway guys... I hope we can do it right next time...
ITS THE WEEKEND!

Well we weren't updating. I did the update two nights ago, it took hours, but there was about 45 minutes notice and while the site was actually down (about 15 minutes) the message you would have seen did explicitly mention that the site was getting upgraded.
Sorry if my wording there made you think something I didn't mean.. that's not how I meant it at all. What I meant by "since you had to ask" was basically "I really don't think you want me to go in depth about the forum software and hosting to explain what happened, but I can if you want"

No, its just that it runs from the get go in the background. The server TRIES to operate as normal, but if there are too many requests, the forum will suffer for a few minutes until the server has grabbed the latest backup.

I should probably put a disclaimer in my signature that I'm two weeks away from finals and graduation .. stress doesn't even begin to describe it.
I guess while I'm at it I might as well be quite clear that I have an autism spectrum disorder (Aspergers) and figuring out things like how to react to people and how to keep things calm does not come easily. I really have to put a lot of time and thought into it, but when the thread starts out angry my heart rate skyrockets (it actually still is ... 168 beats per minute, in case you were wondering. heart rate monitor watch ftw) and I can't really control what I say sometimes.
I just need to know that everyone is nice and calm so that I can calm down too, I haven't even been able to eat this delicious banana for breakfast yet o_O
