http://www.thenewspaper.com/rlc/pix/eztaglane.jpgElectronic toll roads in Texas are confusing motorists and causing significant safety hazards. Old-fashioned cash toll booths are already known to increase the risk of accidents (http://www.thenewspaper.com/news/17/1792.asp), but videotape from Harris County toll road officials documents how electronic alternatives create dangers of their own.

KTRK-TV in Houston reported on several cases where confused EZ Tag toll transponder users were confused by the multiple signs directing motorists variously into "Full Service" or "EZ tag" or "Exact Change" lanes, some of which may or may not be working. Instead of attempting to process all of the visual information at speed, some drivers just decided to stop in the middle of the road to figure it out.

"That's like stopping on I-10 in the fast lanes during rush hour and getting out and walking around your vehicle, it's dangerous," Harris County Precinct One Constable's Office Lieutenant Jeff Cook told KTRK.

Others dangerously swerved out of the wrong lane into the proper lane, or attempted to back out of the EZ Tag lanes. The incidents are common and the consequences can be fatal. In January, a three-year old was killed in an accident caused by a constable rear-ending a confused driver.

At times, the confusion is not even the motorist's fault. Grahame Taylor found last June that his EZ Tag toll transponder failed to work at entrance or exit ramps on the Sam Houston Tollway.

"It doesn't appear that they have researched the rollout of this program very well," Taylor told KRIV-TV. "In fact, it looks like they're using their customer base to troubleshoot the program."

yes. The 407ETR is not only the best paved stretch of highway I've seen in Canada, the electronic toll system is amazing. Plus the whole thing is fenced in so no hitting deer or other wildlife!

I've never been sent a bill though, and I've been using the 407 for years.

For those who haven't seen such a spectacle, it's a 100% electronic toll highway, there are no toll booths at all. You can have a transponder or not, transponder removes a fee or gives you a slight savings on the toll (someone correct me if I'm wrong). You go through the cameras at full speed, and since they don't have to have toll booths with staff they can have as many exits as they want, none of the BS like the New York State Thruway where sometimes there's 20+ miles between exits and the exit ramps are terrible convoluted such that both sides of the highway share an offramp and toll booths.

The beauty of it is that basically just take any existing NON-toll highway, and you could just set up the cameras on onramps and offramps, no new road construction needed at all.

and of course I have a pic:

stopping in the middle of the road? really? we got toll roads in austin and signing couldnt be any clearer. "txtag" goes here "cash" goes here. or, you can just drive through the electronic tag lanes and theyll send you a bill. problem with that is they charge a decent service charge.

the problem is not its in texas, the problem is its houston

Are those like a Texas version of the Sun-Pass? (I love the sun pass)

I hate when people stop in the electronic lanes. People die that way.

We have that option.
In Austin that's what I do. I don't have a tag, I just go right for the picture.
I don't want to stop in fear of someone ramming my asshole, also, I'm lazy.

...and I never have change on me...

They charge you more though, which is crap. They charge you for the stamp and fee to send it in the mail. *sigh* So what once was like a $1.00 is now $3. *eyeroll*

Didn't see this. >.<

Agree about Houston. That is the most ephed up city EVER to drive in. Houston puts TX on the ephing map of stupidity. Not a city you want to drive in if you really care about your car. You are bound to get ran into.
