I've been in touch with PAR regarding Protege gear sets, they are still available, 1-4 gear. Price is $3,800 AUD, available immediately in straight cut only. Helical cut is roughly 14 weeks out for the same price.

There are many different options for a new gearset. Either PM me or feel free to jump on PAR's website.

From Gerald Chan (from PAR):
We stock a billet synchromesh engagement 1st~4th gear set for the Mazda
G-Series transmission. This is a very popular gear set with many
customers pushing up to 500hp and using them for both drag and
circuit/rally racing applications.

The gear set consists of the following parts:

Input/main shaft
1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears
3rd and 4th pinion gears
3rd and 4th gears converted to needle roller bearings

You also have the option of gears that will allow you to use the double
cone synchromesh from 1st/2nd gears on 3rd and 4th for super slick
shifting in the higher gears.

The price for the gear set is $3,800 AUD plus delivery.

what is that advantage of helical and straight cut?

Helical is what you have in there now. It generally speaking is much less noisy than straight cut. Straight cut is NOT something you'd want to do for daily driving. Straight cut is so darn loud its basically drag only.

Straight cut is a bit stronger, IIRC... Focus??

Ok, so here's a curve ball...and I am throwing this stuff out there mostly because I dont know shit about trannies, but I want to learn.

I remember on the other forum Focus (I think) was selling gearsets that were custom sets. A couple of them had a combination of helical and straight cut gears. What would be the advantage to this?

Are straight cuts like super high performance application and helicals are more for comfort driving?

Do people who combine the two types do so because they replace commonly weaker gears with the straight cuts, but the rest with helical for comfort/noise factor? (for example the MSP is said to have a weak 3rd and 5th gear...would a good option be to get a strong set of helicals for gears 1,2,and 4, and straight cuts for extra strength for 3 and 5?)

Advantages and disavantages:

Straight cut is stronger but has less contact patch since fewer teeth are contacting at the same time.

Straight cut is a noisier, although Par told me that it would not be louder than the exhaust.......

Double synchros is the way to go. That is what I did with mine. Know that going double synchro will give you another $500 in parts to purchase: i.e. the proper hubs and the synchros, which are about $80 each(you need 4)...

hey thanks for the info focus. Is there any advantage to running a mixed set...for example some helical gears and some straight cut?

You cannot with the PAR geasret, run stock gears. The input and output shaft, which are made from aircraft steel, are different design. Instead of the gears rolling on bushings, PAR uses needle bearings. The design incorporated better lubrication.

As for noise, well, you do keep your stock 5th gear , which is helical...
