View Full Version : Seized rear caliper?

I think my passenger rear caliper has seized up. Last time I had the car jacked up I noticed that wheel wouldn't turn freely and required a bit of force, whereas the other side would spin freely without much effort.
Where do I start here? Should I try retracting the caliper with the allen bolt in the back?

hahaha welcome to the club! My driver's side rear one is seized, stephen's passenger side rear one is seized.
Yeah attempting to retract it would be a first step, make sure you take the cap off the brake fluid reservoir first. If it's not that bad (like mine is) you'll notice that the piston just won't retract fully. If it's bad, you might not be able to retract it at all.
Do you notice any constant brake noise (i.e. drive with windows down next to a wall) or excessive brake dust on the one wheel?

The only thing I noticed was that it would squeak when I reverse out of my driveway. Other than that, nothing out of the ordinary.

One thing I did the first time this happened, and it kinda helped, was manually run the piston in and out while spraying it down with your rust penetrant of choice. It freed it up well enough for me to get by for the last few months...but it's only a temporary fix.

Make sure you guys use the proper grease. From what I've been told, the caliper grease from auto parts stores is bad, it dries up and kinda causes rust deposits. There's a 3m "silicone paste" that does the trick.

I managed to retract the caliper and it seems a lot better for now, but the bad news is that the inside pad is about done whereas the outside one still has a good 50% left. I do have some new brakes I bought from Spooled but I don't wanna install them if I can still put the old ones to good use. Guess that just gives me an excuse to go AutoX or drive aggressively so I can wear out the rest and replace them all at once ;)
